In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, genetic and biochemical analyses have revealed the existence of two species of acid phosphatase; one, repressible by Pi and the other, repressible by thiamin. the properties of thiamin-repressible acid phosphatase (T-rAPase) encoded by PHO 3 gene in S. cerevisiae were investigated, since the fact that the PHO 3 product is repressible by thiamin may indicate a possible role for the enzyme in thiamin matabolism. As a result, T-rAPase was proved to be identical to a periplasmic soluble thiamin-binding protein biochemically and genetically. The pho 3 mutant cells of S. cerevisiae in contrast to the parent cells have markedly reduced activity of the uptake of [^<14>C]thiamin phosphates. From these results with the enzymatic properties obtained, it was concluded that thiamin repressible acid phosphatase in s. cerevisiae physiologically catalyzes the hydrolysis of thiamin phosphates in the periplasmic space, thus participating in utilization of the thiamin moiety of the phosphates by yeast cells. Moreover, evidences obtained from the modification of T-rAPase with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl-aminopropyl) carbodiimide indicated that the high affinity of T-rAPase for thiamin phosphates is due to the thiamin-binding properties of this enzyme.

An immunocompromised state to a slight degree was established in mice by the administration of 20-30 mg/kg of 5-Fluorouracil (5-Fu), an anticancer drug five times every other day. After 5-Fu administration, markedly observed were the decrease in the number of leukocytes, in the weight of spleen and thymus and the suppression of weight gain. these impairments gradually recovered to a normal level after discontinuation of 5-Fu administration. In order to determine the effect of retinoids on 5-Fu-induced immunosuppression, mice were fed with diet supplemented with 10 or 50 ppm of retinyl palmitate or retinoic acid. Retinoids showed a restoring effect on the number of leukocytes. In addition, a protective effect of retinoic acid diet was observed against infection with Listeria monocytogenes in mice given 5-Fu. However, there was no effect of the retinoids on weight loss or decrease in the weight of spleen and thymus caused by 5-Fu administration.

The distribution of AsA and it's derivatives in Japanese quail was studied under the administration of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). blood total AsA and plasma AsA values were tended to increase in ACTH administration group, but DKG value was not detected in both control and ACTH administration group. Moreover, the levels of AsA value in organs were significantly decreased in adrenal, heart, testis and thymus. A similar trend was observed at the levels of DAsA and DKG value in adrenal, testis and thymus. These results suggested that the stress condition might be affected on AsA metabolism and consumption in animals.

Serum vitamin B_<12> (B_<12>) contents in growing-fattening pigs and brood sows were measured by microbiological assay. B_<12> contents in each stage of the growing-fattening pigs were 230 pg/ml (1 week old), 260pg/ml (3 weeks), 284pg/ml (1 month), 364pg/ml(2 months), 383pg/ml(3 months), 343pg/ml(4 months), 295pg/ml (5 months), 268pg/ml (6 months), respectively. The B_<12> content significantly increased (P<0.05) with age and reached a peak at 3 months of age. Thereafter, it decreased significantly (P<0.05). B_<12> contents in nonpregnant pigs (virgin) were 240pg/ml. In pregnant pigs, B_<12> contents were 244pg/ml in an early stage (up to 30th day of gestation), 227pg/ml in a middle stage (from 30th to 80th days) and 210pg/ml in a late stage (from the 80th day of gestation to the day before parturition). After parturition, the b_<12> contents were 233pg/ml in the lactating pigs. Furthermore, we investigated the relationships between B_<12> content and litter size or parity. The B_<12> content was significantly low (P<0.01) in the mothers of higher litter size in contrast to those of lower litter size. B_<12> content was not affected by parity.

A method of the high performance liquid chromatographic measurement of Z-urocanic acid (cis-form) and E-urocanic acid (trans-form) is described. The analytical method for the measurement of Z- and E-urocanic acid employed were a Tosoh ODS 80_<TM> (250mm×4.6mm I.D.) column eluted with 20 mM potassium dihydrogenphosphate containing 1 g/l of sodium heptanesulfonate (pH was adjusted to 3.7 by the addition of phosphoric acid): acetonitrile=93:7 (v/v) at a flow-rate of 1.0 ml/min. The UV detector was set at 264nm. The column temperature was maintained at 40℃. Under these conditions, Z-urocanic acid and E-urocanic acid were eluted at about 5.6 and 7.5 min, respectively. The detection limits of both compounds were 2 pmol (276pg) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5:1. This technique was used to analyze the compounds in human sweat and on surface of human cheek and the total time required for one analysis was around 19 min.
