The administration of antivitamin B6 to mice is attended by intermittent running-fits. The cause of the onset of running-fit may be ascribed to the following successive events at some nerve terminals in mid-brain; the drop in pydidoxal phosphate level → in glutamic acid decarboxylase activity → in γ-aminobutyric acid level → in release of the amino acid. The intermittence (onset and cessation) of seizures appeares to tune with change in concentration of blood C0_2 which increases with the onset of seizures and converts an inactive γ-aminobutyric acid receptor into an active form.

Weanling rats were fed vitamin B_2 deficient or normal diet. The body weights of vitamin B_2 deficient rats were not increased during 5 weeks. vitamin B_2 contents in blood from the deficient rats were decreased to 30% from normal level, and total flavin contents in the peritoneal leukocytes were also depresiated to approximately 50% A little increase of polymorphonucler leukocytes (PMNs) was observed from haematogram. Electron microscopic studies showed no significant changes in vitamin B_2 deficient PMNs from peritoneal cavity in terms of nuclei, mitochondria and plasma membrane. Although the total flavin contents in PMNs from the deficient rats were significantly decreased, the rates of O_2 production were kept normal level. In other words, there was no correlations between the rates of O_2^- production and the flavin contents in PMNs. These results indicate that, at least, nutritional vitamin B_2 does not affect the rate of O_2^- production which is believed as a flavin enzyme in PMNs.

Reaction of thamine free base (1) with cyanogenbromide (XII) afforded {2-methyl-5-[N-[[2-methyl-3-[(2-methyl-4,5-dihydro-3-furyl)dithio] tetrahydro-2-furyl]formamidomethyl]-4-pyrimidyl}cyanamide (XIV, 10.6% yield) and 1-methyl-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-yl-disulfide (XIII, 16% yield). Reactions of I and its N-phenylcarbamoyl derivative (XIX) with hydrogenperoxide produced 2,6a-dimethyl-6a,8,9,9a-tetrahydr0-5H-furo[2,3-h]thiachromine (XVIII) and 1-{2-methyl-5-[(3a-methyl-2-0xo-perhydrofuro [2,3-d] thiazol-3-yl) methyl]-4-pyrirnidyl}-3-phenylurea (XXI) respectively. The reaction mechanisms for the above reactions were discussed as shown in chart 6 and mechanism for the formation of thiochrome (XI) from the reaction of thiamine (IX) with XII was also discussed as shown in chart 7.
