ω-Amino acid transaminases catalyze the transamination of ω-amino acids with pyruvate and α-ketoglutarate as an amino donor. The distribution of the transaminases in microorganisms has been described with the emphasis on those of ω-amino acid: pyruvate transaminase (ω-APT) and γ-aminobutyrate transaminase (GABA-T). The GABA-T activity has been demonstrated in various microorganisms, though ω-APT was found in bacteria and yeasts. The reactivity of GABA-T toward β-alanine was related to the presence of ω-APT in the microorganisms. The enzymologic properties of the purified and crystallized transaminases have been described. These transaminases were inhibited by carbonyl reagents and SH reagents except ω-APT. The enzymes have been also characterized for spectral properties, coenzyme contents, suicide substrate reaction and stereochemistry of the reaction. Protein chemical studies revealed no homology between ω-amino acid transaminases and other PLP enzymes. Three dimensional structure of ω-APT has been determined at 2.0 A resolution and showed high degree of homology between ω-APT and aspartate transaminase in the supersecondary structure around active site region.

The absorption of topically applied thiamin and thiamin tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide (TTFD) by the rat has been studied. Thiamin concentrations were high in blood and liver of 5% thiamin or 5% TTFD administered rat. After topical application of ointment for 2hrs, thiamin concentrations were significantly high in liver, spleen, kidney and blood of thiamin (5%) administrated rats, and in brain, liver, spleen, kidney, muscle and blood of the administered rats compared with those of control rats.

Improved extraction method in the combination use of an ultrasonicator and 1N perchloric acid as the extraction medium was proposed, where the ultrasonication was carried out at 20kHz (25 watt) for 20sec under the dark conditions in an icebath. This newly developed method has advantageous in following points. This method is time-consumming one and B_6 derivatives in the sample, in question, were well extracted, by minimizing autooxidation and degradation. Especially, PLP, which was added to bovine serum albumin (BSA), was well recovered as its form from the PLP-BSA complex. Finally, this method is applicable to a small volume of sample without the volume change, which is critical for the determination of very little amount of vitamin.
