At Japan Cancer Institute, 194 patients with malignant tumors of the nasopharynx have been encountered in the period of sixteen years since 1947 to 1962. This was 4% of all the out-patients with head and neck cancer. The incidence was predominant in male over female in a ratio 2 to 1. Those who had consuleted with a doctor within three months after the onset of thesymptoms were 46% in cancer and 70% in sarcoma. Eighty-one per cent of the cases were accompanied with metastasis to the cervical lymph-nodes and 60% of these were of bilateral involvement. Major symptoms are nasal obstruction (42%), impaired hearing (30%) and headache (20%), and apearnnce of these symptoms was about eaual between cancer and sarcoma in this region. Histologically, cancer consisted of 52% of squamous cell carcinoma 32% of transitional cell carcinoma and 8% of anaplastic carcinoma, while 92% of sarcoma was reticulum-cell sarcoma. Thirty-two per cent of the tumors were originally developed from the fornix, 37% were from the lateral walls and 3% were from the soft palate.
Since 34 of Showa (1959), we have carried out the hyposensitization treatment on 95patients of allergic rhinitis with the allergens which induced positive reaction in the intradermal testings in each individuals. Some of patients were treated concomitantly with other drugs, autoserum and Asthremedin. (1) The hyposensitization treatment has been carried out on 95 patients of allergic rhinitis for a period of more than 3 years by intradermal injections on the flexor surface of the upper arm of 0.02ml. of allergen extract once a week, then, intervals being gradually prolonged according to the size of wheal and erythema. Some of patients were treated with two or more kinds of allergens. (2) The allergen extracts used were house dust extract of 1: 10, 1: 100, and 1: 1000 dilution, Alternaria extract, Botrytis cinerea extract, cat hair extract and others, and, of these, house dust extract of 1: 10 dilution was used most frequently, i.e. on 60 patients (63.1%). (3) Concomitant treatments performed consisted of the oral administration of Metron and Neo-Restamin, the intradermal injection of Asthremedin (for patients who were suffering from asthma and urticaria coincidentally), and the autoserum treatment (for patients whose symptoms tended to worsen in the premenstrual period) (58 patients, 61.1%). (4) Thirty-seven of 95 patients (38.9%) were treated by the hyposensitization alone. (5) Results of the hyposensitization treatment of allergic rhinitis, obtained by analysis of 41 answers (those of residents in Tokyo) to the questionnaire, are as follows: a) Cure and improvement were obtained in 27 of 41 patients (65.8%). b) Eight (19.5%) of patients classified as cured or improved were those who were treated by the hyposensitization alone, and others were subjected to the concomitant treatments. c) Of 27 patients classified as cured or improved, 14 (51.9%) patients were those on whom the treatment was started within a period of 2 years after the onset of the disease, and, in general, the higher percentage of improvement were obtained in a group of patients on whom the treatment was started within the shorter period after the onset of the disease. d) Ten or less injections were sufficient for cure or improvement in 18 of 27 patients (66.6%), but more than 51 injections were required in 3 patients.
Pronase P (Empynase), a proteinase, has been administered orally to 30 patients with chronic sinusitis three copsules daily for consecutive 28 days. Thus evaluation of the therapeutic effect of this drug has been made both objectively and subjectively utilizing various tests. General conclusions drawned are as follows: 1) Of 22 patients to whom paspat intradermal test was applied, 12 or 54.6% revealed negative reaction after the conclusion of the administration, in contrast with, 9 or 40.9% revealed negative reaction prior to the administration of this drug. 2) Of 22 patients to whom agultination test was imposed, on the other hand, 8 or 30.8%indicated negative reaction, while 6 cases or 27.3% showed negative before the administration of this drug. 3) Subjective alleviation of the symptoms has been expressed by 25 of 30 patients or in 80.7%. 4) Objective improvement was obtained in 20 of 30 cases. Others failed to show any improvement. 5) As general evaluation, 20 cases or 64.6% concluded as improved or markedly improved and it is interesting that this value incidentally coincide with the results of objective improvement of the symptoms.
Logetron decreases the contrast of x-ray photo and increases the contrast of the fine region (for example, pneumatization of mastoid, mammary gland, etc.) so that it becomes easier to read and diagnose the x-ray photo. In our department, peanuts, resin part of false teeth and plastic pencil cup of non radioopaque foreign bodies in trachea, bronchus and esophagus in animal were x-rayed and these x-ray films were copied by using Logetron. These conditions on routine radiographic examinations are surely difficult to be identified however, we could demonstrate those foreign bodies clearly in Logetronogram.
