In the simple determination of vitamin A in margarine which has been reported by the authors, yellow AB and OB were found to become pheoylazo-acetaldehyde-β-naphthylimid or ο-tolylazo-acetaldehyde-β-naphthylimide by condensing with acetaldehyde and to be removed easily by acetic acid. Various phenylazo-and ο-tolylazo-aldehyde-β-naphthylimides were prepared from yellow AB or OB, and their chemical properties were listed.

The authors have devised a simple method to reduce and decolorize the artificial dyes, yellow AB and OB, in the unsaponifiable fraction of margarine by treating the petroleum ether solution with glacial acetic acid and sodium hydrosulfite. Applying this method, the vitamin A in margarine which did not contain carotenoides, could be determined easily. The recovery of vitamin A throughout the whole procedure was over 93%. In this determination, yellow AB was found to be reduced to 1,2-naphthylenediamine and aniline by sodium hydrosulfite.

Urinary excretion of pantothenic acid and its correlation with various liver functions were examined in normal subjects and in patients with liver diseases. Correlation was found between pantothenic acid excretion and various liver function, especially, thymol turbidity test, serum cholesterol ester ratio, hippuric acid synthesis test and blood pyruvate. From these results, it was discussed that in liver damage there exists internally the abnormal metabolism of pantothenic acid and this abnormality is considered to play an important role in the disturbances of hippuric acid synthesis, α-keto acid and cholesterol metabolism which are observed in liver damage.

The metabolic pattern and the sparing effect of vitamin B_<12> were studied in pantothenic acid deficiency in the rat and the following results were obtained : a) The liver of pantothenic acid deficient rat had higher vitamin B_<12> content than the control, but the plasma vitamin B_<12> level was not elevated in pantothenic acid deficiency. b) Administration of a large dose of vitamin B_<12> to rats receiving suboptimal dose of pantothenic acid had sparing effect on the survival rate. c) Absorption and excretion of radioactive vitamin B_<12> was not impaired in pantothenic acid deficiency. d) Radioactive vitamin B_<12> introduced either by intestinal absorption or by injection was retained more in the liver on gram basis in pantothenic acid deficient rats than the normal. It was proposed from the evidence presented that these two vitamins are closely interrelated in the intermediary metabolism, and that in pantothenic acid deficiency the utilization of vitamin B_<12> is impaired to result in elevated liver vitamin B_<12> levels.
