In view of recent progresses in the separation and purification of flavin compounds from various organisms and of discoveries of new flavin compounds, the existence of flavin compound such as flavinhypoxanthinedinucleotide (FHD) seems to be not impossible. The chemical preparation of FHD was achieved by the deamination of FAD using HNO_2. There was little difference in the physicochemical properties between FHD and FAD except their absorption spectra in which the shoulder build at 250-255 mμ was specific for FHD. The biological activity of FHD was examined with D-amino acid oxidase, but no remarkable activity was found. The enzymatic deamination of FAD by adenosine deaminase prepared from takadiastase was examined spectrophotometrically, and FHD was demonstrated from the reaction mixture on the paper chromatography.

It was previously reported that were significant differences in the alkaline phosphatase activity of several organs between the cure of rickets in the administration of vitamin D and so-called spontaneous cure which had been frequently observed in experimental rickets of rats. "Phosphate cure" considered as the most important one among causes of spontaneous cure is studied with x-ray photograph and with the analysis of bone salts on comparison with "vitamin D cure". There are appreciable differences in x-ray pictures between two curative processes. In phosphate cure, phosphate precipitates on the bone matrix at first, and then the precipitation of calcium increases gradually, and the ash content is more abundant than in another case. On the other hand, the process of the precipitation of bone salts in vitamin D cure is reverse.

Following the previous report, the alkaline phospatase activities of serum and of several organs in rats were studied in "phosphate cure" and in "vitamin D cure" of rickets. The conclusions were as follows : (1) The alkaline phosphatase activity of small intestine had primarily no effect on the absorption of phosphate. (2) In phosphate cure, the alkaline phosphatase activity of bone was very low compared with in vitamin D cure. Such variations in bone were possible due to the amount of osteoblasts appearing in primordial bone marrow. (3) Vitamin D activated the alkaline phostphatase of organs, especially intracellular one, and its activating effect reached to the maximum at 48 or 72 hours after the administration of vitamin D. (4) It is assumed that the variation of the activity of intracellular alkaline phosphatase has no influence on the level of the activity in serum.

In this report, it is studied histochemically on thetibiae in "phosphate cure" and in "vitamin D cure" of rickets. In the former, it can be observed the vigorous degeneration of cartilage matrix, but the invasion of bone marrow is far behind the advance of degeneration. In the latter, however, three changes : the degeneration of cartilage matrix, the invasion of bone marrow and the ossification are observed at the same region of metaphysis, and abundant osteoblasts appear in the primordial bone marrow. The alkaline phosphatase of metaphysis is seemed to have some relationship to the metabolism or degeneration of cartilage matrix.

The thiamine decomposing activity was investigated with NDGA, hydroquinone-NDGA, hydroquinone-hexestrol, iso-amylhydroquinone, BHA, vitamin K_5,gossypol and diisoeugenol, since the chemical structure of phenolic antioxidants suggested the possibility of their thiamine decomposing action. The destruction of thiamine was recognized with all the compounds tested, and especially, considerably with NDGA, hydroquinone-NDGA, hydroquinone-hexestrol and diisoeugenol, while comparatively less in power with BHA. The thiamine decomposing activity is approximately proportional to the antioxidant activity in hydroxyl group, but it is likely that alkylene or alkyl group which seems to increase the antionxidant power weakens the thiamine decomposing activity.

One to fifty mg of vitamin E per day was administered to rats of 30-40g of body weight fed on a diet lacking the vitamin. After 40 days the growth of this group of rats with the vitamin was found more advanced than that of the control group. A large dose of the vitamin exerted no bad effect. The growth response curve shows that the daily requirement of vitamin E for the rat seems to be 1 mg or less.

The influences of vitamin E on the absorption and utilization of carotene and vitamin A were investigated with young albino rats of 30〜40 g of body weight fed on vitamin A and E deficient diet. The results indicated that vitamin E was as effective as usual, but that the requirement was much smaller than proposed in the past.

Blood pyruvic acid concentration was determined in 34 portal hypertention cases. The obtained values were higher than those usually found in healthy subjects, and could hardly be lowered by injection of thiamine but injection of cocarboxylase was sometimes effective in reducing them. After a prolonged liver protection treatment, the lowering effect of cocarboxylase became eminent except for 7cases which showed no response to the injection of cocarboxylase. When porta-caval anastomosis was performed, the pyruvic acid values in the blood were elevated remarkably in all cases. In cases with mild elevation it could be decreased by a prolonged supply of thiamine or cocarboxylase, but not in cases with considerable elevation. The cases in which high pyruvic acid levels showed any response neither to injection of thiamine or cocarboxylase, nor to liver protection treatment before the operation proved always of bad prognosis. Supply of cocarboxylase to patients with Eck-fistula syndrome was sometimes effective.

The authors examined the several methods for synthesizing α-tocopherol. Pseudocumene and 1,3,5-Xylenol (3,5-Dimethylphenol) separated from coal tar were used as starting materials. Trimethylhydroquinone, the key intermediate, was prepared in three ways. Another important material is phytol and it is easily obtained from so-called chlorophyll paste. By condensation of phytol and trimethylhydroquinone, the crude α-tocopherol was obtained which was converted to its acetate in the next step. The purified product showed the same spectra and E value with those of the pure α-tocopheryl acetate.

The present report deals with observations on the relationship between vitamin D and rat growth as well as rickets, fed with semi-synthetic diets having various Ca/P ratios, mainly low in calcium. It was found that the dose of vitamin D promoted growth of rats fed with low Ca diet (Ca/P 1 : 5 or Ca≒0), but the sympotoms of rickets were not remarkable even though vitamin D was not administered.
