Thirty minutes after an administration of adrenalin to the normal rat, a remarkable decrease of pyridoxal contents was observed in blood, liver, kidney and brain. However, the value gradually returned to normal. While pyrocarpine administration did not exert any remarkable influence.

Activities of some special flavin enzymes of rat liver which have been found to be markedly depressed in riboflavin deficiency were measured when the animals were divided into 4 groups fed on diets containing 0,7,25 and 40% of protein respectively. Xanthine oxidase activity was scarcely detected in the liver of rats fed on the protein free diet. The maximal activity was observed in the case of the 25% protein diet. Activities of glycolic acid oxidase, D-amino acid oxidase and glycine oxidase remained to some extent in the liver of rats fed on the protein free diet and gave their maximum values in the case of the 7% protein diet. The greater part of xanthine oxidase was present in the supernatant fraction of cells, while the other enzymes were distributed in both of mitochondrial and supernatant fractions. In comparison of these results with those obtained in riboflavin deficiency, it was observed that activities of three enzymes, except xanthine oxidase might be depend on the riboflavin content of the tissue, but xanthine oxidase activity was affected not only by riboflavin content but by the amounts of protein uptake. Discussions were made on the behaviour of these flavin enzymes and the metabolisms of substrates in the liver.

The heat production rates of riboflavin deficient rats were almost equal to those of normal ones at 20-23℃ at the 1st period of feeding, 0-3 weeks after the beginning of the test, but after the 2nd period, 6-7 weeks feeding, the rates of deficient rats were 15-20% less than those of normal. The values of K' derived from Benedict's formula were almost same in the two groups at the 1st period, but after the 2nd period, K' values of deficient groups gradually decreased as compared with those of normal. When the animals were put suddenly into the room of 5℃, after 9-10 weeks feeding, it was required 2.5 hours for normal animals to attain the constant maximal heat production rate which was 1.4 fold of that at 20-23℃, whereas in deficient rats only 35-40% of the maximal rate was produced. It was discussed that these results would be attributed to the decline of metabolic rates of substrates in the liver of riboflavin deficient rats, resulted from the small turnover rate of DPNH due to the decrease in activities of some special flavin enzymes, i.e., xanthine oxidase, glycolic acid oxidase and glycine oxidase.

There are some reports which demonstrated an impaired water metabolism in animals deprived of pyridoxine. In this experiment pyridoxine deficient rats were also found to exhibit a delayed response to a water load. In such animals pitressin exerted a greater and longer lasting antidiuretic effect than in normal controls. Pyridoxal, when administered to normal rats, reduced antidiuretic activity of pitressin. However, experiments carried out in vitro showed that the ability of liver and kidney to inactivate pitressin was not impaired in this deficiency. ADH content in the posterior pituitary lobe was reduced in severe deficiency. Thus it is inferred that ADH does not play an important role in this derangement of water metabolism. While, adrenocortical function was examined by measuring urinary 17-ketosteroids excretion, adrenal ascorbic acid content and adrenal weight, but no differences were found between deficient and normal animals. These results indicate that adrenocortical function is not largely altered in this deficiency.
