The results obtained from statistic observation on 30 cases of immature infants hospitalized to the Premature infants-ward during one year after April 1959 are summarized as follows.
1) More important causes of genesis of the premature infants are the obstetrical factors which predispose toward them.
Those of certain significance are;
a) Toxaemia of pregnancy.
b) Complications of delivery, including Caesarean section.
c) High maternal age.
d) Multiple pregnancy.
e) Under-nutrition of the mother.
f) Artificial interruption of the pregnancy.
2) Prognosis: Immature infants the more prone to die, the more their infants are smaller, the more the periods of pregnancy are shorter. Having nothing to do with the body weight at birth, water-bathing gave them worse influence for their prognosis, and the delay of hospitalization too affect them fatal result.
Therefore, immature infants should be hospitalized where they have incubators and other relevant nursing instruments.
3) Infant should be distrubed as little as possible. Best achieved by nursing babies naked. If dehydration is present, it is better to give paraenteral fluid.
Nasal catheter feeding is most satisfactory in smaller immature infants, if properly conducted. Medicine dropper feeding may be used for the small premuture infant with a good swallowing reflex, the baby who will suck usually can swallow.
Bottle feeding is used in larger premature infants or in those with a vigorous sucking reflex.
