With an intention of claritying the decomposing mechanism of the kidney of homologous transplantation, experiments of the homologous kidney transpaantation were undertaken together with double homologous transplantation by the use of Cortison. The results obtained were as follows:
1. The kidney of homologous transplantation starts the excretion of urine within 24-48 hours. This urine is normal except its lower specific gravity and acidity. When the transplanted kidney begins to decompose, the urinary quantity reduces followed by the appearance of acute anuria syndrom When the host possessed only the transplanted kidney, the residual N content of the blood showed an increase causing uremia.
2. The transplanted kidney was enlarged by the post-operative thickening of the capsule. Histologically, there was a marked infiltration of pyroninophilic round cells in the cortex and the decomposition of the parenchyma of transplanted kidney was observed only in the cortex.
3. Of the main visceral organs of the recipient, marked infiltration of pyroninophilic round cells was observed in the liver, lung, pancreas and the spleen.
4. Mean survival period of the transplanted homologous kidney was 6 days.
5. Acut anuria syndrom observed on the cases possessed the residual kidney are considered as a temporarily immunological phenomenon caused by the damage of the residual kidney.
6. Significance of the appearance of round cells following the homologous kidney transplantation is not clear, but it can be considered that they are produced in the reticuloendothelial system of the trans planted kidney by the antigen-antibody reaction of the heterologous protein between the transplanted kidney and the reipient and, moreover, they participate in the antibody production on the transplanted kidney itself.
7. In the experiment of the double homologous kidney transplantation made by the use of Cortison, urinary excretion begins earlier in contrast to the group without Cortison. Decrease in the urinary amount which follows the decomposition of transplanted kidney is slow and the appearance of acute anuria syndrom as well as the symptoms of uremia are remarkably alleviated.
8. The transpranted kidney shows a marked enlargement, but the renal capsule shows no thickening. As for for histological changes, they are mostly the same as the findings of the kidney of homologous transplantation.
9. Of the findings of main visceral organs, the presence of pyroninophilic round cell infiltration in the kidney of the secondary transplantation was the same as in the case of the homologous transplantation, but the cellular infiltration was absent in the other organs.
10. Survival period of the transplanted kidney showed no appreciable difference from the group did not receive Cortison.
11. In the experiment of double homologous kidney transplantation, clinical and histological findings appear to show a considerable effect of Cortison administration, but there are also some doubtful points.
12. In view of the histological findings of the two experiments stated above, it is considered that a kind of organ specific immunological reactions participate in the immunological reactions between the transplanted kidney and the recipient.
