A continuous extraction method was applied to separating Co(II) and Ni(II). 8-quinolinol (Ox) was used as extraction reagent because it is a well-known chelate reagent. In the present measurement, the Ox concentration in the extraction solvent was 1.0 × 10
-4 mol/l and the pH of the aqueous phase containing the metals was 6.0, which was adjusted with an acetate buffer solution. When the Ox reagent concentration was lower than 5.0×10
-4 mol/l, Co(II) and Ni(II) formed CoR
2·2H
2O and NiR
2·HR in the aqueous phase, respectively. Since NiR
2·HR can be extracted more easily than CoR
2·2H
2O, the only NiR
2·HR is extracted using the above - mentioned conditions with present continuous extraction method. As a result of extraction, Ni(II) was carried into the distillation flask and separated from Co(II) in a single operation.
