    Our aim was to describe the migratory process of pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and to examine the relationship between the migration and physical environments (sea surface temperature and day-length). From tag data for 4, 876 individuals for the past thirty years, we examined distribution change, migratory speed and day-length during open sea migration. The open sea distribution was consistent with 4-11°C sea surface waters as found by past studies. Mean migratory speed was 31.5±27.8km/day. Migratory speed was significantly correlated with day-length, and pink salmon tended to migrate fast around the summer solstice. This result suggests that the photoperiod is an important factor related to the spawning migration of pink salmon.

    Development of the culture of marine fishes is dependent on detailed information on their early life stages. This paper describes the timing of differentiation, initial inflation and development of the swimbladder in Japanese sea bass larvae. Developmental changes in yolk and oil globule volumes and specific gravities were also observed. The mouth opened when the yolk mass was greater than the oil globule volume. First feeding was observed when the oil globule volume became greater than that of the yolk. Specific gravity of larvae increased rapidly during the first day after hatching then became relatively constant around the neutral bouyancy level.
    A rudimentary swimbladder, protruding from the dorso-posterior wall of the primordial stomach, was first observed 2 days after hatching. Initial inflation of the swimbladder occurred 8 days after hatching and was complete in most larvae by 16 days after hatching, when the oil globule was completely absorbed. A few larvae were observed with uninflated swimbladders in which epithelial cells exhibited hypertrophy. Uninflated swimbladders were atrophic about 30 days after hatching. These results indicate that the development and degeneration of the swimbladder of the Japanese sea bass is similar to that of other physoclistous species.

    We reared the oval squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana in pens from June 3 to July 31 1992. The eggs spawned by these squid were reared in a tank to hatch. A female reared with a male in a pen spawned 11 times at intervals of 1-9 days from June 11 to July 30. This female laid 1, 540 egg capsules containing 7, 780 eggs in total (55 to 302 capsules containing 231 to 1, 388 eggs at one spawning). The hatchability of the eggs at each spawning ranged from 66.7 to 97.8%. Another female reared without a male in a pen spawned more than four times, but the hatchability rate of the eggs was lower than the former female. The female with a male had spermatophores when she died, while the female without a male had no spermatophores after several spawnings (both females had spermatophores at the beginning of the experiment). These results suggest that the oval squids copulated over the period from the previous spawning to the next.
    The number (Y) of eggs in one capsule was related to the water temperature (X, °C) on the day of spawning. This relation was expressed by the following equation. Y=15.1-0.426X.

    The auditory threshold levels of walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas) were measured in order to determine the optimum conditions for marine ranching utilizing underwater sound. The auditory characteristics of walleye pollock were determined by heart beat conditioning using 8 frequencies of pure tone stimuli from 60 to 1, 000Hz coupled with an electric shock. Pure tone conditioning stimuli were presented to the fish for 5 seconds with a 0.1 second 12V DC electric shock applied 3 seconds after the start of the sound projection. The positive response to the pure tone stimulus of the conditioned fish consisted of an inhibition of one or more heartbeats.
    Results show that tested walleye pollock are sensitive to pure tones in the frequency range from 60 to 1kHz, with greatest sensitivity in the range from 120 to 200Hz. At the most sensitive frequencies, the mean thresholds were between 97.7 and 100.2dB (re 1μPa) under a background noise level between 55 and 75dB (re 1μPa/√Hz). Hearing ability declined gradually with increasing frequency above 400Hz. The upper limit of audible frequency is believed to be about 1kHz.

    The reproductive characters such as hatching time, egg diameter and total length of hatched larvae were observed to find genetic differences between two local races of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis. The two forms were reared consistently in the same tank and under the same environmental conditions from the young to adult stages in order to standardize environmental effects in the inter- and intra-racial cross breeding tests.
    Significant differences between the two local races were observed in such characters as days to 50% hatching and total length of hatched larvae. The larvae of the landlocked form hatched out significantly earlier than those of the amphidromous form. The egg diameter and total length of the landlocked form hatched larvae were significantly shorter than those of the amphidromous form. Paternal effects were found when comparing these reproductive characters between intra-racial and inter-racial crosses, which suggests that these differences between the two local races might be determined by genetic factors.

    Basic conditions of fishways for freshwater amphidromous shrimps, two atyids Caridina japonica and Paratya compressa and a palaemonid Macrobrachium japonicum, which migrate to upstream habitats by walking at night, were studied using an experimental apparatus comprised of ten distinct flooring materials. As a result, effective fishway conditions were defined as follows: three-dimensional mesh structure (0.5mm in mesh sizes), e.g., cellular concrete, in the flooring, ≤50° at the inclination, and ≤65cm/s at the surface current velocity in the fishway. A plan for modifying and improving existing fishways and a proposal for preserving populations of amphidromous shrimps above dams are discussed.

    The diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii GRAN is one of the harmful species that causes serious damage to Nori (Porphyra) culture in the coastal sea of Japan. We found resting cells of C. wailesii in sediments of Harima-Nada, Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The resting cells in the sediments were distinguished from vegetative cells because the cytoplasms of resting cells were partially separated from their frustules and were concentrated in the center of the cell. When isolated resting cells were incubated at 20°C under continuous illumination of 65μmol· m-2, s-1, these cells showed a quick response of morphological change into vegetative cells. About 70% of the resting cells rejuvenated and about 80% of the rejuvenated cells finished their first cell divisions within 48 hours. This diatom can survive under dark conditions for long periods (at least 15 months) and can rejuvenate rapidly with adequate light, temperature and nutrients. These results suggest that resting cells might be responsible in seeding for the bloom of this diatom in Harima-Nada.

    Many alfonsino eggs that had not been collected in the sea were collected in the expected spawning ground around Izu Islands off central Japan from June to August, 1993. The eggs were collected in 5 sampling areas. Most eggs were collected from 2 to 6 a.m., and most were in the Morula to embryo-appearance stages. A few of the most developed eggs which were just about to hatch were collected around the spawning ground. More eggs were collected by a 0-250m tow than by a 0-100m tow, suggesting that the eggs gradually diffused from the spawning ground as development proceeded.

    This paper presents a newly developed ultrasonic measuring system with micro transducer for geometrical measurement of model nets in a test tank.
    The, system consists of two channels, consisting of micro transducers, transmitters, receivers and a personal computer. Time differences between two sound sensors can be measured simultaneously in detail throug modulated pulse signals controlled by the computer, thus giving the geometrical measurements of the net, height and width of net mouth, and distance between two doors, even while changing the towing speed.
    The reliability of the system was confirmed by comparing the model data measured by this system with those by ordinary measuring instruments.

    The flow rate of human erythrocytes on microchannels was measured to evaluate their deformability when treated with soy phospholipids, hydrogenated soy phospholipids, phospholipids containing icosape-ntaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA-containing phosphatidylserine and DHA-containing phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylethanolamine were observed to be the most effective lipid molecular species to improve the deformability of human erythrocytes, while hydrogenated phospho-lipids tended to impair deformability.

    The biosynthetic pathway of 5Z, 8Z, 11Z, 14Z, 18Z-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20: 5n-3) in Vibrio sp. isolated from sea urchin was studied. EPA was one of the major fatty acid constituents (17.5%) in the bacteria, while the other polyunsaturated fatty acids were trace elements (<1.0%). The radioactivity in the fatty acids was measured by a liquid scintillation counter after separating with argentic impregnated thin layer chromatography. The conversion from [1-14C] C18:1n-9 to C20:5n-3 was oxygen-dependent and cerulenin-sensitive. In the presence of cerulenin, the accumulation of radioactive trienoic fatty acid increased and tetra-and pentaenoic acids decreased. These results suggest that C18:1n-9 was aerobically desaturated and elongated to C20:5n-3 via C18:3. Since [1-14C] C20:4n-6 and [1-14C] C18:3n-3 were converted to C20:5n-3, the desaturation of n-6 to n-3 unsaturated fatty acids occur in both C18 and C20 chain length.

    To clarify changes in body components with growth in cultured red sea bream, we measured amounts of fat, water, protein, and ash in sample minced whole body in fish aged zero, one and two, and analyzed the changes with growth independent of standard body length.
    For cultured red sea bream, the relative amounts of fat, water, and protein without the factor of standard body length were all higher in fish aged one than those in fish aged zero and two. The relative amount of ash, however, was very similar among fish aged zero, one, and two. Positive correlations were recognized among the three relative amounts of fat, water and protein.
    In comparison with red sea bream, both the relative amounts of water and protein were remarkably higher in wild bream than in cultured bream. However, the relative amount of fat was much lower in wild bream than in cultured bream, while the relative amount of ash was very similar between the wild and cultured fish. Therefore, in the total of cultured and wild fish specimens, positive correlation was recognized only between the relative amounts of water and protein.
    These results lead us to conclude that there is more muscle in wild red sea bream than in cultured sea bream.

    To clarify the influence of body composition on the deviation of fish body density in cultured red sea bream, the contents of fat, water, protein, and ash in whole body were analyzed after measuring the body density of living fish in 39 specimens of cultured and wild fish.
    A significant, negative correlation was found between the fish body density and the body fat content, and a significant, positive correlation was found between the deviation of fish body density from the regression line and the density of remaining matter, without fat and water from whole body. On the other hand, a significant, negative correlation was found between the density of remaining matter and the body protein content though no significant correlation was found between that of remaining matter and body ash content. Therefore, it is suggested that the deviation of fish body density from the regression line between the fish body density and the body fat content is caused by the body protein content, or muscle quantity, in the whole body.

    Meat blocks from walleye pollack were soaked in solutions containing 0.5-1.0M NaCl (N), 0.5-1.5M sorbitol (S), or their combinations with varied ratios for 24 hours at 4°C.
    During soaking, the increase in N and S of the meat, and the denaturation of myofibrillar protein as measured by the loss of Ca-ATPase activity and the cross-linking of myosin heavy chain of the same meat were investigated.
    The results were as follows: (1) The permeation of N into the meat depended on the concentration of N but not on the copresence of S concentration. (2) The permeation of S depended on the concentration of S, although the rate of permeation varied with the copresence of N concentration. (3) With increasing the concentration of N in the meat, the denaturation of myofibrillar protein accelerated, whereas increasing the concentration of S suppressed the same change.
    These findings suggest that the quality of meat block soaked in NaCl-sorbitol solution can be controlled by selecting the concentration and relative proportion of N and S in the soaking solution.

    Meat blocks from walleye pollack were soaked in solutions containing 0.5-1.5M NaCl, 0.5-1.0M sorbitol. or their combinations with varied ratios for 24 hours at 4°C. After soaking, the cured meats were subjected to dehydration at 15°C. Changes in weight, NaCl and sorbitol concentrations of the meat, and myofibrillar Ca-ATPase activity together with crosslinking of myosin heavy chain of the same meat were investigated as a function of dehydration time.
    The results were as follows: (1) The meats containing 0.40-0.70M NaCl, 0.37-1.02M sorbitol, or combinations of 0.38-1.68M NaCl and 0.34-0.85M sorbitol were subjected to the dehydration process. (2) The rates of reduction of the weight of cured meats agreed well with the increase in NaCl and sorbitol concentration of the same meats induced by the dehydration. (3) The rate of dehydration of the cured meats was not related to the rate of denaturation of myofibrillar protein of the same meats.
    It is thus likely that the water retention ability of the meat is controlled by the concentration of NaCl and sorbitol, and their relative proportion in the meat, which was prepared by curing.
