    A sequence of the formation of the laminary structure in the endocuticle newly formed after molting of a shore crab, G. depressus, was studied with the aid of lead acetate.
    1. Clearcut lead marks running parallel to the surface of the exoskeleton are found to occur in the formed endocuticle.
    2. The majority of the laminary structure of the endocuticle is formed rapidly within several days following molting and after that the speed of their formation gradually becomes to slow down with the lapse of time. Nevertheless, the newly formed endocuticle is completed within 10 days or so.
    3. The laminary structure is not formed regularly by daily rhythm.

    Blood sugar, glucose tolerance, urinary glucose and keton bodies, and blood pH were studied on 177 Sekoke carp and 179 normal controls.
    1. Fasting blood sugar value for 106 normal carp was 39.2±0.8mg/100ml (Mean±S.E.). On the other hand, almost all the diseased carp examined showed hyperglycemia, at a fasting level of 77.6±3.6mg/100 ml (n=61).
    2. Oral administration of glucose (0.5g/kg) on normal carp evoked a hyperglycemia showing a maximum after one hour and returning to near normal levels 5-6 hours after glucose loading.
    3. Sekoke carp apparently showed a decreased glucose tolerance. A mode of their glucose tolerance curve was very similar to those ever described for diabetes mellitus in man and other animals.
    4. Occurrence of glycosuria and ketonuria were rare in the normal controls, but they were frequently detected in the diseased carp.
    5. About half the diseased carp examined showed acidotic states.

    Responses of Sekoke, and normal carp to mammalian insulin were studied.
    1) Hypoglycemic effect of 5 IU/kg body weight insulin was not distinct in normal carp.
    2) A dose of 10 IU/kg body weight of insulin produced a marked hypoglycemia in normal carp 5 hours after the treatment. Blood sugar returned to near normal levels by 20-24 hours. During the period of the experiment, no convulsion was observed.
    3) Sekoke carp were less responsive to 10 IU/kg body weight of insulin than normals.

    The adductor muscle of scallops consists of two kinds of muscles: One is a striated muscle and the other is a smooth muscle. These muscles are different from each other in some respects: In color, the striated muscle is slightly reddish, but the smooth muscle is rather white; in size, the former is almost nine times as large as the latter. Physiologically the former works in the instant closing of valves, while the latter keeps the valves closed. Furthermore, the striated muscle is more palatable than the other.
    With this in mind, the extractives from both the adductor muscles and the body juice of scallop, Pecten yessoensis, were analyzed for amino acid composition and organic and inorganic phosphorus contents.
    To the muscle homogenate or body juice 10 volumes of 1% picric acid solution were added. Then the extracts were passed through a column of Dowex 2X 10 to remove picric acid. Amino acids were determined by the Hitachi Amino Acid Analyzer Model KLA-3. The determination of phosphorus in a 0.6 N perchloric acid extract was carried out by the FISKE and SUBBAROW's method.
    No distinct difference was found in the amount of amino nitrogen between the two muscles. The same tendency was observed in the ratio of amino nitrogen to the total nitrogen. As for the amino acid content, glycine formed about 50% of the total amino acids, and taurine accounted for 23-42% in all the samples examined.
    Of the three samples, the striated muscle was the highest in phosphorus content and the body juice was the lowest. The content of arginine in the striated and smooth muscles was higher than that of the other amino acids except glycine, taurine, glutamic acid, and alanine. From these results, the authors have presumed that arginine phosphate acts as an energetic source in the two muscles.

    A screening of malate dehydrogenase (M D H) isozyme composition of skeletal muscle from two population samples of saury juvenile collected at Suruga By revealed three phenotypes existing in high frequencies. The electrophoretic patterns and the frequency distributions of three types in the samples indicated that the M D H isozymes are dimers formed by random association of two subunits under the control of separate genetic loci, and three types are attributed to two alleles at the B locus of two loci coding for the enzyme. Both of the two samples of juveniles were composed of the three types in a stage of genetic equilibrium with respect to the B alleles, and each appeared to be a group of individuals having a certain genetic structure.

    In a previous paper, it was reported that pepsin-treated neutral salt soluble collagen, obtained from the nose cartilage of sperm whale, exhibits some unusual properties, particularly the high contents of hydroxylysine and amide nitrogen and the existence of glucuronic acid. In order to investigate whether its unusual properties are characteristic of sperm whale collagen or not, some collagens were isolated from other tissues of the sperm whale, such as hide, brain-oil bag, and intermuscular connective tissue (tendinous septa) and characterized with respects to chemical composition and some physical properties. As the major parts of these collagens are insoluble in neutral salt and dilute acid, soluble collagen was obtained, by pepsin treatment.
    The intrinsic viscosity of these collagens lies in the range of 18 and 20 dl/g and the specific optical rotation in the range of -390° and -434°. Furthermore, the values of denaturation temperature lie in the range of 31.7 and 33.8°C, which are comparable to that of warm-water fish. The amino acid composition and content of carbohydrates in these collagens are very similar to each other and are also comparable to those of vertebrate collagen. These results suggest that there is no substantial difference among collagens obtained from these three different tissues. However, the contents of hydroxylysine, amide nitrogen, and carbohydrates from these collagens were considerably lower those of nose cartilage collagen and glucuronic acid could not be found in any of the collagens reported here. The difference in the chemical composition of the collagens obtained from different tissues of a single species is considered due to the particular function of each tissue.

    The subunits of neutral salt soluble collagen from nose cartilage and pepsin-solubilized collagen from skin of sperm whale were separated by CM-cellulose column chromatography of the denatured proteins and each fraction obtained was examined by disc electrophoresis. For comparison, acid soluble collagen of the great blue shark skin was also studied. The shark collagen consists of α1, α2, β11, β22, and γ components and the whale skin collagen consists of α1, α2., α3, β22, γ, and unidentified β (perhaps β11, β13, or β33). As a whole, the chromatograms of these two collagens are similar to those of other reported collagens. However, the chromatogram of collagen from whale nose cartilage was quite different from that of ordinary collagen. When this collagen was chromatographed under similar conditions used for shark and whale skin collagens, protein peaks were very fast in appearing in the effluent, and major parts of the collagen were found to be not adsorbed by CM-cellulose. At a lower ionic strength, four kinds of α and one of β were isolated. The fast peak (α-component) accounted for about 1/3 of the total protein contained 9% hydroxyproline and 2.3% glucuronic acid. This unusual pattern is probably due to the non-coIlagenous material, such as glucuronic acid, combined to the cartilage collagen molecule.

    The amounts of amino acids and the related compounds, peptides, nucleotides, organic acids, free sugars, inorganic matter, and coloring matter of the fresh extracts, which were obtained from the meat of sei whale under conditions designed to minimize any chemical changes, and of the condensed extracts were determined, and 97.5% and 99.3% of the solid were accounted for, respectively.
    The most notable differences between two preparations were found in the levels of the imidazole peptides, particularly in the amount of balenine: About 49% of the solid of the fresh extracts was occupied by the imidazole dipeptides, and approximately 90% of the dipeptides by balenine. The amounts of the peptides became reduced to 35.5% during condensation, and it is likely that the decrease is stoichiometrically related to the formation of the coloring matter.
    A new approach to estimate the amount of the coloring matter by use of cation-exchange resine was described.
