The studies were conducted at an apartment house located at Yurigaoka, Kawasaki-City and also at a farmhouse in Hino-Machi, Tokyo-to.
The subjects were the same college girls as in the previous study and the housewives in those houses also served as subjects. Their physical status almost approximated to the Japanese standard.
The subjects performed various daily activities and respiratory gas was collected in a Douglasbag and analyzed at the place using Roken type gas analyzer.
1. At the 2DK type apartment house R. M. R. for various activities were as follows.
Sweeping (manual work) 4.2, sweeping with electric cleaner, 2.6, cleaning toiletroom, 3.9. Manual washing (crouching in the bath room) 4.6, washing with electric washing machine, 1.7, putting back the dried washings, 0.5.
Setting the bed, 5.2, drying the beddings in the sun (on the verandah) 4.9, putting the beddings back into the closet, 3.6.
Ironing by standing, 1.8, ironing by sitting, 2.2.
Cooking (a little moved in front of the kitchen table) 0.5.
Ascending and descending the stairs from 2nd floor to 5th floor, 3.6-5.8.
Simple motion of standing up or sitting down, observed very often in the housewive's daily work: for 5 repetitions of this motion every one minute, R. M. R. was 3.9, and for 10 times standing up in succession R. M. R. was 3.3.
2. At the farmhouse
Wiping and cleaning, 3.2, rubbing with dried cloth, 3.7, sweeping in the garden, 1.7, cleaning the bathroom, 2.8.
Manual washing on the stand, 2.2, washing (crouching) 1.2, hanging up the washing, 1.1.
Opening and closing the sliding doors: opening seven sliding doors, 2.5, closing them, 2. 1.
Drawing water with manual pump, 5.1, carrying water, 3.8, bringing firewood and prepare a bath, 1.7.
R. M. R. for cooking was averagely 0.8 and for putting things in order after meal was 1.6. For taking the vegetables from the field and washing them, R. M. R. was 1.6, and it took 6′25″ for the whole process.
