A 75 year old man with hepatitis C virus related liver cirrhosis and multiple hepatocellular carcinoma admitted in our hospital due to swelling, redness and pain on both legs. On admission, laboratory data revealed neutropenia, low proteinemia, high C-reactive protinemia and expenditure of coagulation factors. His skin lesion had blisters on both legs. Thirteen hours after admission, he had died according to septic shock.
Edwardsiella tarda were proved by culture of blood and fluid from blister. Our patient was diagnosed as necrotizing fascilitis and fatal septic caused by
Edwardsiella tarda. Although necrotizing fascilitis due to
Edwardsiella tarda is rare complication of cirrhosis, we must put forward an attention that this infection may lead to origin of serious condition in cirrhotic patients.
