M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography we useful for the diagnosis of bovine congenital and acquired heart diseases. Echocardiographic features were described in 7 bovine animals affected with dilated cardiomyopathy (two cases), traumatic pericarditis, bacterial pericarditis, vegetative bacterial endocarditis associated with ventricular septal defect, bicuspid aortic valve showing the prolapse of one valve leaflet, and suspected ventricular septal defect with the overriding aorta.

M.gypseumand M.caniswere inoculated into soil and left for a given period of time under a similar condition to the outdoor circumstance or by the window. As a result, M.gypseumwas recovered by culture after exposure to daylight at room temperature by the window for 15 days, but M. canis in soil showed no growth in culture by the hair-baiting technique after exposure to daylight for 7 or 10 days or over. When M.gypseumand M.caniswere inoculated together into soil and cultured immediately, the surface of the soil was coverd with colonies of M.gypseumgrowing rapidly on the 15th day ofculture, but no growth of M.caniswas observed on the same day.
These results support the conventional views that M.canishas rarely been isolated from soil, and that soil has failed to serve as the source of M.canisinfection.

A clinical diagnosis of abdominal fat necrosis was made on 30 Japanese indigenous cows kept in the Mizusawa area. These cows divided into three groups for treatment. Those of group 1 were given daily with 300g ofCoix lachrymajobi (proprietary name: Yokuinin) in those of group 2 with 150gof a product (proprietary name: Soysterol) prepared from soybean oil extracts containing fatty acids, several kinds of plant sterols and vitamin E and those of group 3 with 150g of Yokuinin and 150g of Soysterol for 4months. Furthermore, the cows of each group were infused intravenously with 400ml of 40% arginine solution 2 or 5 times during the experimental period to shorten the time for treatment. A decrease in size or the disappearance of mass of fat necrosis was observed in each group. The arginine infusion had no effect to shorten the time for treatment. No changes were found in any bloodcomponent.

A total of 147 cattle and 2 swine were slaughtered and suspected of septicemia in an abattoir over aperiod from 1979 to 1982.Obligate anaerobes were isolated from 17 cattle and a pig affected with bacterial endocarditis, gangrenous mastitis, bilateral pyelonephritis, and other diseases. In 8 of the18 animals, more then 2 organs were positive for the same bacteria. Twelve isolates belonged to Fusobacterium (necrophorum or other species). Three isolates belonged to .Clostridium perfringens. Another 3 isolates were anaerobic Gram-negative rods. Fifteen of the 18 animals were also positive for aerobes.

A disease with diarrhea as a main symptom broke out among lambs 20 to 35 days of age on a farm in Tochigi Prefecture over a period from March to May, 1983. Etiological examination was conducted in five of 9 lambs which died of it. Intestinal villi were atrophic. Epithelial cells were rounded off or detached from the tip of each/villus. Rotavirus was isolated from three of the 5 lambs. It multiplied, showing CPE.Escherichiacoil was also isolated from the small intestine. An attempt was made to detect enterotoxin and ciliary antigen, but in vain.

Four bovine fetuses stillborn almost at term occurring enzootically in 1974 and 1975 were affected with congenital abnormalities, such as the enlargement of the head, arthrogyrposis in the legs, kyphosis, torticollis, hydrocephalus, and hypoplastic myopathy. The lateral ventricles were enlarged in the longitudinal section of the brain. Three cervical muscles on the right side, the omotransversarius, sternomastoideus, and sternooccipitalis, were completely deficient in one fetus.
Histologically, stenosis of the mesencephalic canal and dysraphia of this and the spinal central canals were notced. Focal atrophy and disappearance of muscle fibers and the replacement of them by increased adipose tissue were found.
The neutralization tests for Akabane and BVD-MD virus was negative.
Pathologically and virologically, the congenital abnormality mentioned above must be a syndrome differentfrom Akabane disease and BVD-MD virus infection. The muscular change is concidered to be related tothe central nervous system.

Cattle were divided into three age groups:(1) younger than 3 months, (2) from 3 to 12 months and (3) older than 1 year. Total thiamine and thiamine phosphate levels in tissues, blood and rumen fluid were estimated by a thiochrome procedure.
Total thiamine level was high in heart, kidneys, pancreas, liver and spleen. The levels in cardiac, diaphragmatic and skeletal muscle were lower in group 3 than in any other group.
There was a significant correlation between the cerebral and hepatic thiaminelevels (r=0.77, n=16), Particularly, the hepatic thiamine level was affected significantly with thiamine intake. The rumen fluid thiamine level was the lowest in weanling calves. This result seemed to be related to intake and synthesis of thiamine. It was suggested that age factor might have an effect on thiamine deficiency.
The ratio of phosphate B1 to total B1 was high in cardiac, diaphragmatic and skeletal muscle. There was no difference in it in any tissue, blood or rumen fluid among any three groups.

Widespread fibrosarcoma was found in a five-year- old Holstein cow. Original tumor was a discoid mass about 20cm in diameter, located in the subcutis of the left chest. Secondary tumors were noticed in pectoral and abdominal muscles, masseter, parietal pleura, lungs, heart, diaphragm and kidneys, suggesting metastasis via vsculature.
Spindle-shaped cells with numerous mitotic figures were predominant in the tumor tissue. Collagenous fibers were formed around each tumor cell. This was a typical case of fibrosarcoma which arose in the soft part, showing a highly malignant behavior.
