Nephroliths were found in 14 piglets of 9 litters 3-8 days old on 2 farms over, a period from December, 1981, to May, 1982. These piglets had been suffering from diarrhea, dehydration, and marasmus. In them, yellow fine-granular calculi were found abundantly in pyramids and calices in the kidney and occasionally in the renal pelvis and bladder. The renal collecting tubules contained sediments and degenerative cells detached.
Escherichia coli was isolated from the kidney of 6 piglets and
Streptococcus zooepidemicus also from that of two piglets of the six. Virus isolation was negative in the 6 piglets. Urea, uric acid, creatinine, calcium, magnesium, and inorganic phosphorus were high in serum level in 3 piglets. The nephroliths were composed of urate.
