The Hemmeter (Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Tokyo) is an automatic blood cell counter with which blood cells can be counted by its optical system. It was applied to Holstein cows.
It was found to be superior to the hemocytometer in reproducibility and facility in counting. In the erythrocyte count, the correlation was low (r=0.551) between the two methods. In the leukocyte count, the coefficient of correlation was 0.925 between the two methods, but the count with the Hemmeter was approximately 20 % higher than that with the hemocytometer. Therefore, it was difficult to utilize the Hemmeter, with the present adjusting, for the blood cell count especially the erythrocyte count, in Holstein cows.

The Simplate is a device developed for bleeding time determination in man. It was applied to dogs with efficiency. In dogs, bleeding time determination was performed on the dorsum auricularis. In it, pressure on the ear was maintained constant by installing an ear support and a pressure tube deviced to eliminate the effect of a blood capillary. As a result, the reproducibility and sensitivity of the Simplate were satisfactory.
In 40 healthy dogs normal bleeding time was 3.6±1.56 minutes, as determined by the Simplate, and 4.9±1.03 minutes, as determined by the Simplate and a pressure device installed.

Nephroliths were found in 14 piglets of 9 litters 3-8 days old on 2 farms over, a period from December, 1981, to May, 1982. These piglets had been suffering from diarrhea, dehydration, and marasmus. In them, yellow fine-granular calculi were found abundantly in pyramids and calices in the kidney and occasionally in the renal pelvis and bladder. The renal collecting tubules contained sediments and degenerative cells detached.
Escherichia coli was isolated from the kidney of 6 piglets and Streptococcus zooepidemicus also from that of two piglets of the six. Virus isolation was negative in the 6 piglets. Urea, uric acid, creatinine, calcium, magnesium, and inorganic phosphorus were high in serum level in 3 piglets. The nephroliths were composed of urate.

Avian reoviruses were isolated from the tendons and tendon sheaths of 19 chickens of 7 flocks out of 127 tested birds of 22 flocks with clinical evidence of leg weakness. Biological andserological characteristics were examined in 7 isolates selected from the 7 flocks each.
All the isolates produced cytopathic effect (CPE) in chicken kidney and chicken embryo liver and lung cells. Some of them failed to produce CPE in chicken embryo fibroblasts, duck kidney cells, duck embryo fibroblasts and Vero cells. All the isolates produced plaques of differentsizes in chicken kidney cells. Two of the 7 isolates killed all chicken embryos when inoculated viayolksac, allantoic sac and chorioallantoic membrane. Crossneutralization test revealed that the isolates could be divided into three serogroups.

Laparotomy was performed on the median line. The urethra was cat at the cervix vesicae, which was connected with the autotransplanted ileum by end-to-end anastomosis. This ileum was exposed on the epidermis of the subumbilical region on the median line.
Urination was performed with satisfaction. Since the ileum contracte in 2-3 months after operation, no urine remained in it or dropped out of the artificial urethral opening any more after urination. Histological examination revealed no postoperative disturbances 12 months afteroperation. This operation seemed to be applicable to urethrophraxis, urethrostenosis, and urethral injuries in male cats.

Small cell anaplastic carcinoma of the lung was found in a 7-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow. The cow showed remarkable emaciation, cough, anemia, liver dysfunction, and proteinuria. It was slaughtered for teaching laboratory work.
Macroscopically, many tumors varying in size were scattered widely in the lungs, pleurae, liver and some other organs. Histologically, fusiform or polygonal anaplastic tumor cells proliferated to infiltrate and spread in the organs. Electronmicroscopically, electron dense granules of neurosecretory type were confirmed in the cytoplasm of these tumor cells.
