Dairy cows diagnosed as ketosis were treated with MgSO4·7H2O and glucose by the intravenous route. Of 30 cows with ketosis of digestive type, 18 recovered from the disorder within 5 days on the average after this treatment alone, remaining free from recurrence. When the other cows treated with some other therapeutics simultaneously were taken into consideration, the total number of days of treatment was 6 days on the average in the 30 cows. The average dose administered was 49g for magnesium sulfate and 946g for glucose.
Of 9 cows affected with ketosis of neural type, 4 belonged to the tetanic type and 5 to the comatose type. Treatment with magnesium sulfate and glucose showed the same effect upon the neural type as the digestive type, bringing recovery to that type in 5 days on the average.

A 7-year-old Holstein cow manifested coughing at first and then rhinorrhea, pyrexia, markedly rough vesiculer respiration of the left lung, and mild inspiratory dyspnea persistently. Cold edema appeared later in the dewlap and udders. Laboratory examination revealed anemia, an obvious decrease in A/G ratio, an increase in fibrinogen and gamma-globulin, a decrease in serum albumin, and a strongly positive Gross' test.
Symptomatic treatment was performed in vain and with a bad prognosis the cow was sacrificed about 75 days later. Autopsy revealed a neoplasm twice as large as the human head in the diaphragmatic lobe of the left lung. Histologically, this case was diagnosed as primary pulmonary (bronchial) cancer, a rather rare type of tumor in Japan.

A survey on biting flies feeding on cattle was conducted in a pasture at the foot of Mt. Sambe in Shimane prefecture. In it, biting flies were collected from selected cattle by the scooping method over a period from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They were classified into 19 species of 4 genera.
Biting flies appeared continually from the end of April to the beginning of October, or most frequently in the middle of August, when 566 of them were collected over the 12-hour period. They were seen most frequently from 1 to 2 p.m. during the day few of them were observed on rainy days. There was a significant difference at 1% level in the frequency of appearance of biting flies between the fine days and the cloudy ones.
Of the biting flies collected, the following species were most prevalent, as listed in the decreasing order:Atylotus bivittateinus, Tabanus trigeminits, T. kinoshitai, A. horvathi, T. fulvimedioides, T. trigonus, T. refidens, and T. chrysyrus.

A total of 215 strains of Salmonella derived from various kinds of animals and fowls were examined for sensitivity to carbadox under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of carbadox ranged from 3.13 to 100μg/ml, being mostly 25μg/ml, under aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, it ranged from 0.20 to 6.25μg/ml, being mostly 1.56μg/ml. There was no significant difference in sensitivity between aerobie and anaerobic conditions, so far as comparable examinations on AB-PC, FT, SM, and TC were concerned.
