During the period from May to December in 1985-1990, sentinel calves were located in several parts of Okinawa Prefecture for virus isolation and serological survey of arboviruses. A virus designated ON-89-1 was isolated in June 1989 from blood cells of a healthy calf located in the Central Okinawa Island using HmLu-1 cell cultures. The isolate was identified as a member of the Orbivirus by morphology and physicochemical properties, cross-reacting with bluetongue virus (BTV) by immunodiffusion and being neutralized by antiserum to BTV serotype 21. A serologic survey revealed seroconversion in the summer of each year and wide-spread dissemination among cattle throughout the Prefecture.

A 3 month-old female Holstein steer weighing 38 kg showing growth retardation, short tail (3 cm) and ascites had ventricular septal defect and aortic over-riding aortic. In the vertebrae, there were dysplasia of the right spinosus processes caudal to S3, and spondyloschisis between L6 and Cl.The caudal vertebrae consisted of two bones and the caudal most was formed by fusion of two bones.

Six thoroughbred horses, in which electrocardiogram had been recorded for 24 hours, were electrophysiologically examined for atrio-ventricular conductive functions. The second degree atrioventricular block was detected in five cases. The test cases were divided into two groups; two sporadiccases with 0 and 32 episodes/ 24hr and four high-frequency cases with 216-2, 643 episodes/24hr. The beat dropping occurred in all cases after stimulation at an atrial pacing rate of 40 or 50/min. The mean P-R intervals extended with increase in atrial pacing rates from 40 to 100/min, being longer in the high-frequency group than the sporadic group at the same pacing rate. The mean R-R interval was constant irrespective of a pacing rate. The shortest R-R interval, that was measured by the atrio-ventricular conduction curve (the relationship of the minimum R-R interval and the pacing rate), in the sporadic and high-frequency groups were less than 700 msec and more than 750 msec, respectively. The results suggested that the conductive functions of the atrioventricular node electrophysiologically lowered in cases with high-frequency group.

The relationship of metallic foreign bodies in the reticulum as viewed radiofluorscopically and the value of weight gain in heifers were investigated to find out a development arrest factor at a public rearing stall. Metallic foreign bodies were observed in 16.7% of 78 heifers. Weight gains of heifers with foreign bodies sticking to the reticular wall were lower than the standard value listed in the Holstein Cattle Association of Japan for period of rearing. The study therefore, suggests that metallic foreign bodies sticking or stimulating reticular wall appear to be one of the development arrest factors in heifer feeding.

One cat (8-year-old) and two dogs (2-year-and 50-day-old) licking and swallowing porcelain overglaze colors attached to their haircoats and foot pad showed digestive and nervous symptoms and blood examination revealed blood lead concentrations as high as 54 (feline), 240 (canine case No.1) and 46 (canine case No.2) gg/dl, respectively. Radiography indicated lead lines (metaphyseal sclerosis) at the long bone metaphysis in a puppy (canine case No.2). By chelate therapy, the feline and canine No.2 cases recovered, while the canine case No.1 died after severe convulsion.

A 7-year-old Shepherd dog weighing 36.1 kg showing hematuria, recurrent fever, anorexia and vomiting, was found to have the large cystic right kidney by palpation, scout roentgenography, intravenous pyelography and ultrasonography. The right kidney weighing 1, 850g was excised by flank approach, and the patient survived for 14 months after operation without any clinical abnormalities. Histopathological diagnosis was renal cystic adenoma and no bacteria were detected from the cyst fluid by aerobic and anaerobic cultures.

A hen's egg-sized tumor was detected in the abdominal cavity of a rooster of 40, 000 Chanky Strain broilers subjected to meat inspection. Its pathologic examination disclosed a teratomawhich was composed of three germ layers. The ectodermal layer consisted of the predominant central nervous tissue including periperal nerve fiber bundles, accumulation of ocular ciliary cells, differentiated cutaneous tissue as well as feather follicles. In the endodermal tubular arrangements, tracheal columnar epithelial cells, intestinal Goblet cells were distributed. The mesodermal layer had well differentiated cartilage, several smooth and striated muscle fibers, foci of lymphocytes, myxomatous connective tissue, and adipose tissue.
