Calf pneumonia prevailed on a farm in Chiba Prefecture over a period from October to November, 1976. Off 100 calves 20 to 40 days old, 40 were affected with serios coughing, anorexia, depression, and dyspnea. Eventually, 12 calves died. Autopsy on one calf revealed mild pleural adhesion and severe pneumonia.
P. haemolytica, P.multocida, Ureaplasma, and mycoplasma were obtained from the lungs of calf pneumonia. The isolate of
P. haemolyticafermented arabinose, xylose, lactose, mannose, salicin, and trehalose. It was resistant to penicillin and sensitive to thiophenicol, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and colistin.
