An own-devised attachment “Knuckle-Care” was applied to 18 dairy cows with forward knuckling of the fetlock joint of hind limb following dystocia, postpartum recumbency or the gastrocunemius muscle injury. In all 15 cases in which the follow-up studies were possible, knuckling was corrected within 13 days on the average. “Knuckle-Care” characterized by ready attachment, and delicate adjustment, was shown to be a validity of flexible support with an effective rehabilitation treatment.

Porcine Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks in Taiwan between March and April 1997, were analyzed using Geographic Information System (GIS). The prevalence of the infected pigs and infected farms linearly increased, being more than 60% and 20%, respectively, on May 8, and all the prefectures were contaminated with the virus by May 3. The case fatality rate of nearly 20% was unusually high for the FMD outbreak in pigs. The outbreak seemed to have started from the southern and northern parts of Taiwan and later spread to the central and eastern regions of Taiwan. Higher pig densities were considered to be a major factor for virus transmission and prevalence. The high slaughtering rates including suspected herds, in the early stage, restriction of animal transportation and rapid circulation of the disease information, were considered to be of importance to prevent the spread of infections.

Thirteen weak and 31 normal Japanese Black calves were examined for hematological and blood-biochemical profiles and growth rate during 60 days after birth. The weak calves were significantly smaller in weight at birth and daily gain (P<0.01) than the normal calves, during neonatal period, the weak calves were anemic, showing higher levels of serum non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and urea-N as compared with the normal calves, suggesting increased mobilization of body fat and protein. Further, serum globulin levels of the weak calves were lower during the first 3 weeks after birth probably due to decreased or delayed intake of clostrum.

Feces from nomal adult female quails were investigated for microflora once a week for a period of 4 weeks, and the birds sacrificed at 4 weeks were examined for the intestinal microflora. The total numbers of facultatively anaerobic or anaerobic bacteria were 107.1 to 108.9/g feces, with the predominance of Streptococcus (including Enterococcus), Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Eubacterium, and Peptococcaceae. The numbers of each bacterial group fluctuated only within a small range (103-fold), except for Clostridium yeast and Bacteroidaceae. The total numbers of facultatively anaerobic and anaerobic bacteria in the intestine were 105.9 to 109.0/g, being smaller in the upper intestine. Streptococcus (including Enterococcus), Lactobacillus, and Peptococcaceae were the main bacteria found in the intestine. The numbers of microorganisms in the cecum and rectum were correlated to those in feces.

A total of 263 Escherichia coli strains without K88, K99, 987P and F41 fimbriae, which were isolated from pigs with neonatal diarrhea, postweaning diarrhea or edema disease, were examined for a novel adhesin factory of enterotoxigenic E. coli, 2134P, using dot-blot immunoassay. The 2134P fimbriae were found in 7 (8.2%) of 85 isolates from postweaning diarrhea cases and 3 strains (O141: H4) produced both STa and VT, while 1 (O8: H-) both STa and LT. The remaining 2 (OUT: H-) and 1 (O141: H4) produced STa alone and VT alone, respectively.

Two cats, 1.5 and 2 months of age, showing central nervous system (CNS) signs with ataxia had transient improvement by treating and subsequent recurrence of the signs. Hydrocephalus was revealed by ventriculography, and ventriculoperitoneal shunt was made. In one case with two operations before reachig adultfood, no CNS signs could be seen following the final surgery but there was drainage tube obstruction 5 years later. The other case had no CNS sign for one year and five months after operation, although the distal end of drainage tube was dislocated in to subcutaneous tissue of the dorsal chest.

A 3-year-old nulliparous female Siamese suspected of pyometra with vomiting and abdominal dilatation and depression, was revealed to have atresia vaginalis with hypoplasia of vestibulo-vaginal junction after ovariohysterectomy. The both uterine horns and vagina were dilated containing large amount of bloody contents. The vagina was separated from the vestibulum by some connective tissue. The uteus and vagina were histologically almost normal except for severe hemorrhage in the uterine mucosa.

From May to October 1995 in Kagoshima Prefecture, the rectal contents of 100 slaughtered healthy cattle were inoculated onto the SIB agar, and pooled samples of IPA-negative colonies produced were surveyed by PCR for verocytotoxin genes. The genes were readily detected from 12 of rectal content, and the detection of verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli was efficiently performed with the following serological and biochemical examination.
