From May, 1970, to April, 1973, the authors employed R.M.A.T. to examine the agglutinins of
Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae and
L. canicola of 650 dogs which had come from four veterinary hospitals of three cities, Yamaguchi, Tokuyama, and Shimonoseki.
1. The rate of dogs positive for both serotypes was 12.5% in Yamaguchi, 3.1% in Tokuyama, and 22.5% in Shimonoseki. It was 22.1% in male dogs and 9.0% in female ones. It was 18.2% in sick dogs and 14.1% in healthy ones.
2. The monthly positive rate was 25.0% in September, 24.0% in January, 22.0% in April, 0% in February, and 8.0% in May. There was no significant relaionship between climate and positvie rate.
3. The positive rate increased with the advance in age up to four years, when it reached 31.0%. There was no relationship between positive rate and age of dogs over four years. Only 10 of 648 investigated dogs had received vaccination against Leptospira.
4. Of 99 positive dogs, 15 reacted to
L. icterohaemorrhagiae, 9 to
L. canicola, and 75 to both serotypes.
