Blood samples from 43 Japanese Black dams and from their newborns were examined for total protein and glucose contents and erythrocyte values. Twelve weak newborn calves were severely anemic, showing significantly lower values (P<0.01) as compared to 27 normal calves. Their dams, however, were in rather better nutritional status than those that gave birth to normal healthy calves. Negative correlation (P<0.01) of serum globulin concentration was shown between the newborns and their dams, while there was positive correlation at birth between the serum iron level and body weight. No correlation of serum iron concentration was seen between the newborns and their dams. The results suggested that dysfunction of feto-placental transport systems might be concerned with the prevalence of the weak calf syndrome.

Dairy cows in Fukuoka Prefecture were investigated for antibody to Neospora caninum (NS) by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique using the antigen prepared from N. caninum NC-1 strain (a diagnostic kit, VMR, USA). Twelve of 34 (35.3%) cows ever aborted of unknown cause from 1991 to 1994 were positive for the antibody, while only one of 20 (5.0%) cow without history of abortion was positive for the antibody. The cows with the antibody to NS were widely distributed throughout the prefecture. In the farm with the history of an outbreak of neosporosis five years ago, five of 13 (38.5%) cows were positive for the antibody and three heifers were negative for the antibody. The 38 of 50 (76.0%) cows imported from USA were positive for the antibody. The antibody titers of six cows aborted of NS infection were 1: 800 to 1: 12, 600.

Bovine serum samples were labeled with tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphine after wet digestion, and copper and zinc were simultaneously quantified by high performance liquid chromatography using piclic acid as an internal standard. The variation coefficients of copper and zinc were 0.6% and 1.4%, respectively. The recovery rates of both metals were within 100±5% and the detection limits of copper and zinc were 0.01μg/ml and 0.03μg/ml, respectively. The correlation coefficient between the data and those with the conventional colorimetry was more than 0.95. Using this method, the serum copper and zinc levels of 44 apparently healthy Holstein cows were determined to be 0.629 to 1.224μg/ml and 0.276 to 1.334μg/ml, respectively.

Sixty-three draft racehorses having abnormal breath sound during exercise were subjected to endoscopy of the laryngopharynx at rest, revealing abnormal findings in all cases. Laryngeal hemiplegia, pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia, dorsal displacement of the soft palate and arytenoid chondritis were detected in 56 (88.9%), 50 (79.4%), 6 (9.5%) and 1 (1.6%) horses examined, respectively. The prevalence and degree of pharyngeal lymphoid hvperplasia decreased with age.

Neonatal death occurred in 182 of 7, 737 newborn Japanese Black calves, and 107 (59%) of them showed neonatal weakness and 68 (37%) had abnormally lower body weights less than 20kg, though delivered after normal gestation periods (275 days or longer). These 68 calves with intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR) were related with 3 of 9 bulls used for breeding showing significantly higher incidences of IUGR as compared to the other 6 bulls (P<0.01). A family of cows related to a bull also showed significantly higher incidences of IUGR than other families. The results suggested that genetic factors might be involved in the prevalance of IUGR and weak calves in Japanese Black cattle.

A solid mass approximate 20cm in diameter appeared in the head of a male 16-year-old thoroughbred horse was pathologically diagnosed as poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma without cancer pearl formation. The neoplastic cells showed alveolar structure of neoplastic prickle cells with prominently atypical nuclei, frequent mitosis and unicellular keratinization. Some of the cells were cytokeratin positive, and electron microscopy revealed abundant free ribosomes, and less amount of tonofilaments and desmosomes in the tumor cells.

A 13-year-old castrated male mongrel dog was echocardiographically shown to have a large mass at the upper left cardiac atrium, and autopsy revealed a whitish tumor 10cm in diameter near the heart base within the pericardial sac. Histologically, the tumor consisted of oval, spindle or pleomorphic as well as giant cells, infiltrating the endocardium and the left atrial lumen. The case was diagnosed as malignant aortic body tumor and also had mast cell tumors disseminated in various organs.

A 6-year-old male Persian cat was presented with a 1-week history of sneezing and nasal secretion. The cat developed dyspnea and respiration with the opening mouth on the 235th day of the condition. Radiography revealed epipharynx narrowed by a mass protruding from the skull base to the oral cavity, and the patient died 52 days after this presentation. At autopsy, the tumor was shown to penetrate the base of skull reaching the palatum molle. Histologically, the tumor composed of polyhedral eosinophilic cells infiltrated into the brain tissue, diagnosed as pituitary adenocarcinoma.

solation rates for Salmonella in two broiler processing plants were 8.2%(12/147) for carcasses, 16.7%(15/90) for processed meat, 12.0%(3/25) for equipments, and 4.5%(2/44) for chilling water, while the rates in two layer processing plants were 0%(0/54) for carcasses, 9.0%(8/89) for processed meat, and 2.9%(1/35) for chilling water. The serotypes of the 32 isolates from broiler processing plants were S. Hadar (27 strains), S. Newport (2 strains), S. Sofia (2 strains), and S. Blockley (1 strain) and those from layer processing plants were S. Enteritidis (3 strains), S. Agona (2 strains), S. Infantis (2 strains), S. Cerro (1 strain), and S. Saintpaul (1 strain). All the 41 isolates were highly susceptible to SX and TMP, and 36 (87.8%), 24 (58.5%), 22 (53.7%), 13 (31.7%), 11 (26.8%), and 10 (24.4%) isolates were resistant to CP, KM, CER, SM, OTC, and ABPC, respectively.
