  • II. Structure of Substantia spongiosa of Third Phalanx

    The third phalanx of the horse shows a sponge-like appearance as a whole on account of the bone trabeculae assuming a sponge-like structure. It is known that changes have been found in these trabeculae in the case of various diseases of the third phalanx. These changes are the basis of radiological diagnosis. Although changes in the trabeculae of various bones have been clarified in man, no corresponding changes have been clearly demonstrated in horses. Especially, stereoscopic radiographical findings are lacking in these animals.
    The following results were obtained from radiographical examination on the substantia spongiosa of the third phalanx of 142 specimens collected from horses, including a fetus 10 months old and an adult 16 years of age.
    1. Compact parts were found on the dorsal and volar surface. In horses less than 24 months old the border parts were thick, while in adults the thickest part was found directly beneath the protuberance for the extensor tendon and the part of the flexor surface.
    2. Seven systems were distinguished fundamentally among the lines of bone trabeculae in radiographs.
    3. The first and the second system appeared in fetuses 10 to 11 months old, completing at the age of 2 years. On the other hand, the 3rd and 4th system began to appear in the 9th to 12th month and the 5th to 7th system by 2 years of age, both completing by 5 to 6 years of age.
    4. In a radiograph taken at the dorsovolar position, the bone tradeculae were shown as a radiating picture and arranged in lamellar form.
    5. From the radiograph, the dynamic adaptation of the bone trabeculae was considered as follows. When pressure was exerted on the third system arranged horizontally below the joint as a pressurereceiving plate, it was transmitted to the compact part on the same side through the first, second, and 6th system. The 4th, 5th, and 7th system responded to the power of traction by the flexor tendon.

    This paper reports preliminary studies on general permeation of Toxoplasmosis at Owari area in Aichi prefecture.
    Swines, men, dogs and cows were examined from the presence of Toxoplasma antibody by the Hemoagglutination test or Skin test.
    The following results were obtained:
    1. Among the swines tested the positive rate was 21.8 per cent (37/170), in order to compare meat swine with propergative swine, the former showed 18.2 per cent, the later was 45.5 per cent, it showed a much higher positive rate (X2=8.33), however sex difference was not observed significantly (X2=0.17).
    2. Positive rate differs considerably between ordinal and professional person (X2=10.4), and it increases gradually as the older age and the expart.
    3. In the dogs tested the positive rate increases as they grow older (X2s=20.49), However sex and physique difference was not observed significantly.
    4. In the swines, a human beings, dogs and cows, HA-antibody of cows showed the lowest positive rate, being 1.7 per cent (1/60).
    There results suggest generally the saturation of Toxoplasmosis in the Chukyo area, as Toxoplasmosis is becoming the national disease by the propergation and movement from an tract of limited land.

    In September, 1965, formalin-fixed specimens collected from six dead minks (pearl, sapphire, and violet) in Miyagi Prefecture were examined histopathologically and a diagnosis of Aleutian disease was made. Later on, additional specimens came from ten minks of the same farm which had given positiv iodine agglutination tests and, were subjected to autopsy and histopathological examination.
    The principal lesions consisted of plasma-cell infiltration in the liver, spleen, kidney, and other organs, changes in blood vessels, including small arteries, in the liver, kidney, lung, and brain, and glomerular changes.
    Histochemically, there were abnormal plasma cells containing Russell bodies in the cytoplasm (grape cells). Vascular changes were segmental in distribution. There were also intimal proliferation, accumulation of mononuclear cells, and deposition of fibrinoid in the arteriolar media. Acid mucopolysaccharides (AMP) were detected from the vascular fibrinoid together with PAS-positive materials.
    In most of the cases, the glomerular lesions consisted of thickening of the mesangium resulting in an increased lobulation and narrow capillary lumina. Some of them, however, had wire-loop lesions characterized by thickening of the basement menbrane, and nodular lesions with deposition of homogeneous PAS-positive materials. No AMP were detected from the altered glomeruli, except the essentially normal basement membrane.
