Of 12 cows with post-partum purulent endometritis 6 were treated intramusculaly with 25mg of prostaglandin F (PGF) in 5ml saline and the remaining 6 received 5ml saline. They were examined for cervical mucus and histopathology of the biopsyed endometrium. All the PGF-treated animals showed estrous signs 4 days posttreatment (pt). In most of them, neutrophils in the cervical mucus and macrophages in the endometrium disappeared or significantly decreased on 14 days pt. Lymphoid accumulation in the endometrium was less remarkable than the control group. The control group showed neither the estrous sign nor improved findings in the cervical mucus and endometrium during 14 days pt.

Two dairy cows with chronic atrophic abomasitis were investigated clinically and pathologically. The cows were emaciated; excreted undigested, soft feces; and demonstrated subcutaneous edema. In addition, they were hypoproteinemic, hyponatremic, hypocalcemic, hypocholesterolemic, and hypogastrinemic. Visual examination showed the abomasum to be pale yellow-white with pyloric ulcers and multifocal hemorrhage interpreted to indicate chronic inflammation. Histopathological examinations showed the abomasal mucosa to be thin and the fundic and pyloric glands to be atrophic. Mononuclear cells had infiltrated the lamina propria of the pylorus to a remarkable extent. G cells had decreased in number in the pylorus and had migrated to the upper layer of the mucosa. Peanut-lectin (PNA) staining in the pyloric glands was negative. Conceivably, atrophic pyloric and fundic glands, altered G-cell location, and reduced PNA staining may be associated with the digestive disturbance.

Vitamin-E supplements were administered to cows in the periparturient period either daily (2, 000IU/dose) or twice weekly (7, 000IU/dose). Fourteen cows were divided into the following groups: 1) controls (n=5); 2) cows given vitamin-E supplements daily (n=5); and 3) cows given vitamin-E supplements intermittently (n=4). Comparisons were made of vitamin-E concentrations in the dam, the serum of their one-week-old calves, and the dam colostrum. Vitamin-E levels in colostrum were measured within 24 hours after parturition and in calf serum seven days after birth. The levels were significantly higher in both colostrum and calf serum in the group to which Vitamin-E supplements had been administered daily. Consequently, since they maintain high vitamin-E concentration levels in the dam's serum, daily supplements are useful in ensuring effective transmission of vitamin E to the calf by way of the colostrum.

The efficacy and clinical safety of osaterone acetate (TZV-906, Teikoku Hormone Mfg. Co. Ltd.), which displays anti-androgenic action, were assessed when used on dogs with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The subjects-17 dogs-were divided into 3 groups according to administered dosages of TZV-906: group L (n=2) dose if less than 0.25 mg/kg; group M (n=8) dose of 0.25 0.5mg/kg; and group H (n=7) dose of more than 0.5mg/kg. These doses were administered once daily for either 7 or 10 days. Efficacy was evaluated on the basis of clinical signs, radiograpy, digital palpation, and ultrasonography. After 8 days, prostatic size decreased in 15 out of 17 dogs (88.2%). Either excellent or good effects were observed in 13 out of the 17 dogs. These results indicate that a TZV-906 dose of 0.25-0.5mg/kg administered for 7 days is sufficient treatment for prostatic hyperplasia. The prostate-shrinking effect continued for 12 months. These findings show that continious oral doses of TZV-906 (0.25-0.5mg/kg) are easier than and equally as effective as chlomadinone-acetate implantation.

A 14-month-old Pomeranian (2.9 kg) was presented for evaluation of exercise intolerance and fainting. Physical examination revealed systolic murmur (Levine IV/ VI) over the left cranial aspect of the thorax. Cardiac catheterization determined a severe systolic-pressure gradient of 99 mmHg between the right ventricle and the main pulmonary artery. Angiocardiograms revealed right ventricular hypertrophy, valvular pulmonic stenosis, and post-stenotic dilatation. Subsequently, the pulmonic stenosis was corrected by means of the open-patch graft technique performed with the aid of mildly hypothermic extracorporeal circulation. Successfully weaned from the cardiopulmonary bypass, the patient developed no post-surgical complications. Three months after surgery, post-operative gradient pressure had decreased to 6 mmHg. At the time of writing (16 months after surgery), the patient was doing well, demonstrating no clinical signs and requiring no medication. This success suggests that valvular pulmonic stenosis can be corrected with extracorporeal circulation in toy breed dogs.

A 6-year-old, male Great Pyrenean dog was hospitalized with a 1-year history of intermittent anorexia, weight loss, polyuria, polydipsia, exercise intolerance, and intermittent mild diarrhea. Hematological examinations revealed anemia, leukocytosis, azotemia, hyperkalemia, and hyponatremia. Endocrine assays indicated a diagnosis of primary hypoadrenocorticism. Treatment with hydrocortisone (1 mg/kg/day) and a quarter of the normal maintenance dose of fludrocortisone acetate (6μg/kg/day) proved effective. The dog was diagnosed as having a synovial sarcoma at the carpal articulation of the left foreleg 172 days after initial presentation. Following surgery and chemotherapy, hypoadrenocorticism remained firmly under control.

Helminthological surveys was made on raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) captured in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefectures, Japan, from 1990 to 1998. Seventeen species of helminths were detected from 44 (97.8 %) out of 45 raccoon dogs autopsied, including 11 nematode species of Toxocara tanuki, Ancylostoma kushimaense, Arthrostoma miyazakiense, Trichuris vulpis, Dirofilaria immitis, Strongyloides planiceps, Capillaria putorii, C. felis-cati, Tetragomphirus melis, Molineus lagerae and Trichuris sp., 4 trematode species of Metagonimus yokogawai, Echinostoma hortense, Concinnum ten and Stephanoprora sp. and 2 cestode species of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei and Dipylidium caninum. The number of parasites per host ranged from 1 to 9. Nine out of 17 species detected were important for public health because of infectiveness to humans.
