A response of phagocytes in an udder secretion was investigated in normal and mastitis cows by an administration of chitosan (50mg) through the teat canal, respectively. The number of phagocytes and the intensity of chemiluminescence in the udder secretion increased just from the next day after the chitosan administration in both the normal and the mastitis cows. These phenomena were maintained over one week in the mastitis cows, but returned to the normal level within one week in the normal cows. A lebel of lactoferrin in the normal udder secretion increased significantly during 7 days after chitosan administration.

A two-year-old colt, manifesting immediate regurgitation of food or water at the mouth and nostrils, was clinically diagnosed as esophageal obstruction with feed impaction by radiography and endoscopy. After esophagomyotomy and brougienage by esophagotomy, the lumen of the strictured site was increased in diameter and impacted feed was propelled into the thoracic esophagus. The case was discharged 10 days after surgery, and no more recurrence was observed.

Subclasses and mitogenesis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and serum immunoglobulinlevels were compared between healthy and diarrheal 2-week-old Holstain calves at 1 week after introduction into a farm. In diarrheal calves both numbers and percentages of CD8 positive cells were lower than those in healthy calves (p<0.1), but no significant difference was seen between the two groups in numbers and percentages of the surface immunogloblin, CD2, 4 and 8 positive cells, nor in the response to T-cell mitogens. The serum concentration of IgG was significantly lower (p<0.05) in diarrheal calves, while those of IgM and IgA were marginally lower than those (p<0.1).

Therapeutic induction of endogenous tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was applied to three aged female cats with mammary tumors. In a case of adenocarcinoma with lung metastasis, the mammary tumor remarkably reduced in size on the 7th day post-therapy, showing coagulation necrosis with decreased pleural effusion and improved general conditions. In two other cases, the tumors significantly reduced in size after TNF induction. TNF activity was detectable from the tumor effusion.

Videofluorographic swallowing studies were performed on a male, 5-month-old Papion, weighing 1.1kg, which showed dysphagia after weaning. Fluorography revealed cricopharyngeal muscle malfunction due to deficits in relaxation of the cricopharyngeal muscle and incoordination between pharyngeal contraction and cricopharyngeal relaxation. After cricopharyngeal myotomy clinical improvement was achieved.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor air particles increased in concentrationrapidly in 1 to 4 hr after the ignition of kerosene or gas heaters and lowered precipitously thereafter, keeping a level as low as before ignition. The production of PAH was much more by using the kerosene heater than the gas heater.
