Ten laying hens 560 days of age were inoculated intraperitoneally with 2.7 or 13.5×10⁸ colony forming units (CFU) of an “Actinobacillus salpingitidis”/avian Pasteurella haemolytica-like organism. Four of 5 birds inoculated died 3 days after inoculation of 13.5×10⁸ CFU and all 5 birds survived for 13 days after inoculation of 2.7×10⁸ CFU. Soft shell eggs were produced 2 to 4 days after inoculation and egg production was declined. At postmortem examination the peritoneum showed cloudy swelling, the ovarian follicles were hemorrhagic, and the uterine folds of the oviduct were edematous. Microscopy revealed mild inflamatory exudate with bacterial colonies in the abdominal serosa, focal necrosis in the hepatic lobules and lamina propria of the infundibulum and ovarian parenchyma and rarefaction of the splenic pericapillary sheath. The inoculated organism was recovered from the brain, trachea, lung, heart, liver, spleen, kidney, ovary and oviduct of some cases.

Cow sera and fetal tissues from abortion and stillbirth cases occurring in 1983 to 85, in which known virusinfections were ruled out, were examined for neospora infection by indirect immunofluorescence using Neospora caninum antigen and immunohistochemistry or paraffin sections of fetal tissues. Antibody was detected in 15 (30.0%) of 50 cows with abortion as well as in 25 (27.7%) of 90 co-living cows without. Neospora antigen was detected from 3 aborted fetuses in 1984, two Holstein aged 6 months (1 with abnormal habitus) and one Japanese Black aged 8 months with hydrocephaly. These 3 cases showed non-purulent encephalitis and multiple myositis and Neospora antigen was present in lesions.

The effects of ritodrine hydrochloride (RD) and isoxsuprine hydrochloride (IX) on the uterine motility and heart rate were comparatively investigated in oestrous cows. Uterine motility was suppressed up to 22% during a 80min period after intramuscular injection of 100mg RD, and the increased heart rate (150%) persisted up to 70 min. After injection of 100 mg IX the uterine motility decreased to 32% of the control during a 60min period with increased heart rate 1.5-fold up to 150min.

Many piglets showed respiratory signs with hemoptysis after weaning and died at about 40 days of age at a farm in Hiroshima Prefecture from January to February 1996. Pleurisy, interstitial pneumonia and polyserositis were observed in dead cases, and immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence revealed porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus antigen within macrophages in the lungs and pulmonary lymphoid tissues. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae type 1 was isolated from the lesions.

A mass about 6cm in diameter was palpated in the abdominal cavity of a 1-year-old mongrel cat with abortion. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed a cystic lesion located at the right side abdominal cavity. Intravenous urography and blood biochemistry as well as the abnormaly dilated right ureter on laparotomy, suggested no functional recovery of the right kidney and ureter, and these organs were resected with the satisfactory postoperative course. Histopathology revealed chronic ureteritis, suggesting that case was of the resulting megaloureter.

Atypical mycobacteria were recovered from the 10 of 36 seawater (19 strains), 20 of 36 sea sands (22 strains), 4 of 12 brackish water (13 strains), 26 of 60 river water (53 strains) and 6 of 12 waste water (10 strains), The organisms were also isolated from feces from 3 of 240 station pigeons (4 strains), 5 of 240 shrine pigeons (5 strains), 8 of 240 abattoir pigeons (10 strains) and 18 of 240 abattoir crows (33 strains). A total of 18 Mycobacterium avium intracellulare complex (MAIC) strains were detected from the 2 waste water, 1 seawater, 2 abattoir pigeon or 8 crow samples. The isolates were of serovar 8 (4 strains), serovar 4 (3), serovar 6 (2), serovar 12 (1), and untyped (8), and the insertion sequence (IS 901) was found in only one strain of MAIC (serovar 8) from crow.M.kansasii was isolated from 1 waste water 1 abattoir pigeon and 4 crow samples.
