Morphological observation was conducted on 324 swine cases of the malformed heart collected at meat inspection centers in Miyazaki Prefecture from 1987 to 1997. The incidence was 0.07% and the most frequently occurring was aortic stenosis observed in 224 cases (69.1%), followed by endocardial cushion defect in 37 cases (11.4%) and ventricular septal defect in 32 cases (9.9%). Aortic stenosis and endocardial cushion defects might be the most common cardiac anomalies in swine, as proviously described.

A 3-year-old female thoroughbred with malignant lymphoma were histopathologically studied. The affected tissues showed diffuse proliferation of lymphoid cells at various stages of differentiation and their cytoplasm contained numerous dilated rough endoplasmic reticulums and free ribosomes as well as round shaped and sometimes fused Russell bodies which were homogeneous weakly IgG-positive and moderately electron-dense. Some plasma cells were IgM-positive.

Twelve rats, 10 rabbits, 7 goats and 3 cattle were inoculated orally with metacercariae of Fasciola sp.(Japanese strain), and they were orally treated with a single dose of triclabendazole (TCB) when the flukes were aged 56 to 133 days. The animals were killed at 5 to 63 days post treatment, and the number of worms and eggs were compared to those in the untreated control animals. In rats, rabbits and goats treated with more than 5 mg/kg of TCB as well as 2 cattle treated with 6 mg/kg, the perfect reduction of the flukes was shown.

A female dog aged 8 years showing emotional aggressive behaviors and epilepsy-like seizure, was clinically suspected of having metastatic brain tumor involving the limbic system. At autopsy a cystic tumor 25 mm in diameter compressing the brain substance, was detected closely to the right lateral ventricle and several masses similar to that in the brain were recognized in the lungs. Those tumors were histopathologically diagnosed as adenocarcinomas.

The end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide (ETCO2) was evaluated for estimating the arterial partial pressure of CO, (PaCO2) in 88 dogs under inhalation anesthesia during spontaneous ventilation (SV) or intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV). During IPPV ETCO2 was closeley correlated with PaCO2 (r=0.909, p<0.0001, n=45) and difference between the two was 3.8±2.2 mmHg. Also in SV cases with less than 40 breaths/min, ETCO2 was closeley correlated with PaCO2 (r=0.914, p<0.0001, n=100) showing a difference of 5.8±3.8 mmHg, while difference between the two values increased in cases with higher respiratory rates and lying in lateral recumbency. The results suggested that ETCO2 should be kept under 50 mmHg to prevent severe hypercapnia during inhalation anesthesia in dogs.

A male sheed-zoo (shih tzu) dog aged two years living in Tokyo demonstrated anorexia followed by diarrhea and later swelling of the testis suspected of brucellosis. Isolation of bacteria from the blood, urine and excised testis was attempted, and Salmonella was isolated from the swollen right testis. The isolate was serologically identified as Salmonella Infantis, being sensitive to all 10 test drugs examined. The dog serum showed an antibody titer of 1: 160 to Brucella canis, while no organisms were isolated.

It was evaluated how much bacterial contamination of carcasses was mediated by work-gloves during processing in the slaughterhouse. A part of the carcasses hanging from overhead rail was pushed and carried by the hands with cotton (Japanese Gunte), stainless wire (TEKIRENU; Futaba-Sangyo Inc.) or vinyl choloride (MILD HANDS; Dunlop Homeproducts Inc.) gloves. Before and after carrying, the parts of carcasses were examined for the standard plate-bacterial counts using swab method. Using any material gloves the bacterial count of carcasses was significantly (P<0.01) increased after carrying, suggesting that the cleaning and disinfection of the gloves might be of importance in processing the carcasses in slaughter-houses.

The contamination of hog carcases with intestinal contents was investigated at an “on-rail system” slaughterhouse. Of 12, 957 fattening hog carcases, 4, 716 (36.4%) were contaminated, and 1, 294 (49.8%) of 2, 596 cases had ruptured intestines. The rupture occurred at the cecum or colon in 900 (69.6%) cases. The rupture was mostly due to the electric disk sawing to split the gladioluses of carcases, and 40% of cantaminations might have resulted from the mutual contacts of carcases. The rupture of the cecum and colon seemed to be charactristic at “on-rail system” slaughterhouses, in which carcases were suspended upside down and processed.

From September 1994 to August 1995Salmonellawas isolated from 56 of 826 (6.8%) cecum contents of broilers examined at two poultry slaughterhouses in Tokachi district. After the sanitary control of broiler farms was carried out, the isolation was from 25 of 770 (3.2%) cases inspected from January 1996 to December 1996. The isolation rate significantly decreased in 1996 at two broiler farms showing higher isolation rates in 1994 to 1995, but not at a farm with a lower isolation rate. A total of 81 isolates were of eight serotypes, showing various plasmid profiles and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns, suggesting decrease of persisting strains and introduction of new strains after sanitary cortrol, while sanitary control worked well.
