At day 112-113 of gestation a prostaglandin F analogue, Etiproston, was administered intramuscularlyinto the neck of sows as follows: 0.85mg in 10 sows (Group A), 1.7mg in 20 sows (Group B), 3.4mg in 10sows (Group C), and 2ml of a placebo in 10 sows as the control. The time periods from the drug administrationto the start of parturition were 49.1±30.4hr, 28.0±14.8hr and 27.0±4.5hr in Groups A, B and C, respectively, and those of Groups B and C were significantly shorter (p<0.05) than that of control group (56.7±27.6hr). No adverse effects were observed on either the health of the sow and piglets or on the subsequentbreeding capability of sows.

A 3-year-old sow, showing anorexia and listlessness, that died on the day following normal delivery, wasfound to have prominent petechial hemorrhage in the spleen and kidneys, and enlarged and hemorrhagiclymph nodes. Histopathologically, septicemic bacterial emboli were prominent, and Actinobacillus equuliwas isolated in pure culture from various organs and lymph nodes. A 6-year-old thoroughbred horse, showingscratching, extension of the limbs and diarrhea, died and was found to have petechial or ecchymotic hemorrhagesin the lungs, heart, spleen, intestines and superficial lymph nodes. Histopathologically, hemorrhagicthrombosis were prominent in the lungs, liver, spleen and kidneys, and Actinobacillus suis wasisolated from these organs in pure culture.

The main clinical symptom was observedruminal tympany every day or at intervals, and recovered in a few hours with or without treatment. Blood examinationsof two cases with long period revealed slight anemia, low albumin and high NEFA levels inserum. Activities of serum CPK, AST, LDH4, and LDH5, levels of serum electrolytes, and pH and of protozoain rumen juice were normal.

Two each of SPF pigs were feed 240, 160 and 80ppm of a mixture (SO) of sulfamonomethoxine (3%) andorimethoprim (1%) in three group for 5 days, and at day 3 they were challenged with Haemophilus parasuis. Glässer's disease was produced in two un-infected control pigs and the 80ppm group, but the 160 and 240ppm groups showed no clinical signs and no bacteria were recovered. Two SPF and two conventional pigswere reared with a pen, and treated with 240, or 160 ppm of SO for 3 weeks. The SO-treated groups showedno clinical signs, while one of two pigs of the non-SO control group showed signs of Glässer's disease. Allthe SO-treated and non-treated SPF pigs developed CF antibody at 2 weeks of pen-mating, and H. parasuiswas isolated from the nasal mucosa.

Hemolytic gram-negative rods were isolated purely or in mixed culture from various organs of 12 of 23septic pullets and laying hens at five different investigations made from 1983 to 1995. Pathologic diagnosiswas Marek's disease for two of five cases, while the remaining three cases were of infectious coryza, chickenanemia virus infection and bacterial infection. All the isolates were identified as “Actinobacillus salpingitidis”/avian Pasteurella haemolytica-like organisms group, showing the highest sensitivity to enrofloxacin aswell as moderate and low sensitivity to penicillins and macrolide antibiotics, respectively.

Puncture drainage under echographic guidance was performed for bilateral perirenal cysts in a 14-yearoldspayed female cat. Retention of cystic fluid was repeatedly observed in the left kidney. However, thecyst in the right kidney ruptured on puncture, and no further retention was observed. Clinically, retentionof cystic fluid in the left kidney caused depression and anorexia. Removal of cystic fluid slightly improvedthese symptoms. After 8 months, the cat died in a traffic accident, and autopsy was performed. Retentionof fluid was observed in the perirenal cyst in the left kidney. However, the site of rupture was found on theright renal capsule. No retention of cystic fluid was observed. Histologically, severe chronic interstitial nephritiswith amyloid deposition was detected in both the left and right kidneys. There was no difference in thedegree of nephritis or amyloid deposition.

Three of four common squirrel monkeys reared in a zoological garden died during winter time between1994 and 1995, showing focal necrotic lesinos in the liver, spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes, as well as ulcerativeenteritis, interstitial nephritis and mononuclear cell infiltration in the myocardial interstitium. Large coloniesof the gram-negative bacilli were detected in these lesions, and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis O: 6 wasisolated from an affected animal.
