Single ventricle was observed in six of 419 (1.4%) bovine hearts showing congenital cardiovascular anomalies. They were of the left ventricular type with rudimentaly right ventricle. Five of the 6 cases showed situs solitus of the atria, D-looped ventricles, and concordant ventriculoarterial connection, while the remaining one showed situs inversus of the atria, D-looped ventricles, and D-double outlet right ventricle.

Pathological study was performed on 2 natural cases from which porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus was isolated, as well as 6 cases inoculated intranasally with lung homogenates of infected piglets. Slight interstitial pneumonia was observed in a dead 2-day-old piglet from a high abortion rate farm. The other fatal case of 2-month-old piglet showed severe abdominal breathing, purulent bronchopneumonia, interstitial pneumonia, interstitial myocarditis, myocardial necrosis, subcutaneous and thoracic lymphadenitis and nonpurulent encephalitis. In inoculated animals interstitial pneumonia was observed at 1 week. At 4 weeks after inoculation, subcutaneous and thoracic lymph nodes were enlarged and histopathologically, interstitial pneumonia, interstitial myocarditis, subcutaneous and thoracic lymphadenitis, and nonpurulent encephalitis were observed.

Bleeding from umbilical cord stump, which had been a rare symptom in the Chediak-Higashi syndrome (C-HS) or hemophilia-like disease, has been found in 33 Japanese Black cattle in the South Kyusyu area, Japan. We found that 1) the disease could be inherited by the enzootic study, the pedigree analysis and the result of a test mating; 2) most of those affected animals died within an year due to umbilical cord bleeding or recurrent hemorrhage; 3) the results of screening tests had no prominent abnormalities except the moderately low ADP-induced platelet aggregation. According to the results above, the hemorrhagic disease characterized by umbilical bleeding was considered to be a new inherited bleeding disorder which is totally different from the C-HS and the hemophilia-like disease.

From August 1992 to July 1994, Japanese Black Cattle reared in Kagoshima area were surveyed for abomasal nematodes at autopsy. The worms were detected in 55 of 143 cases (38.5%), and 40 (28.0%) had parasitic nodules in the abomasal mucosa. The prevailing species were Ostertagia ostertagi (36.4%), Mecistocirrus digitatus (7.0%), Haemonchus contortus (2.8%), Trichostrongylus axei (3.5%), T. colubriformis (0.7%), Nematodirus helvetianus (1.4%), and Cooperia sp.(1.4%). The rate of parasitism was lower in the winter season and was higher in the aged cattle.-

Conventional beschitin-W (BC) and recently devised sponge-type chitin (SC) were applied to experimentally produced full skin defect (15.0cm2) in dogs. The unhealed defect areas 21 days after application were 0.58 and 1.89cm2 in cases of SC and BC, respectively. Histologically, granulation tissues developed with neutrophil and macrophage infiltration around chitin at 3 days after application in both groups. Fibroblast proliferation and capillary neogenesis were seen in 7 days. The autoskin grafted with or without flake-type chitin (FC) was necrotized, and the unhealed defect areas at 21 days after application were 1.01 and 1.75cm2 in cases with and without FC, respectively.-Key

Alkaline phosphatase staining of canine neutrophils was compared between Kaplow method and Tomonaga method. It was confirmed that the neutrophilic alkaline phosphatase (NAP) activities were demonstrated in dogs by Tomonaga method, and that Kaplow method also stained NAP at a lower intensity with a minor modification of the fixation.

Three wild Japanese serows (Capricornis crispus) infected with parapox virus in Tokyo Metropolitan area were examined for pathologic lesions. Multifocal papular lesions were seen on the lips, eyelids, oral mucosa and/or on adjacent skin. Histopathologically, keratinocytes showed ballooning and marked proliferation, and eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were frequently observed. Electron microscopy revealed a number of parapox virions within ballooned keratinocytes.

A cloth enzyme immunoassay (CEIA) kit reacting to 5 serovars including S. Enteritidis and not to non-Salmonella organisms, was tested for the detection of Salmonella from 68 samples from 17 kinds of foods, which had been contaminated experimentally by adding with various doses of Salmonella and incubated. Positive results were obtained with samples contaminated with more than 106 organisms/ml, and some negative samples by the conventional plate culture method because of predominance of non-Salmonella organisms were also positive by CEIA. The calf fecal samples, from which Salmonella were isolated, were positive by CEIA.

Of 3, 442, 463 slaughter pigs in Shibaura Meat Inspection Center during the period of April 1984 to March 1995, 1, 365 (0.04%) were diagnosed as swine erysipelas. The clinical types could be divided into arthritis or lymphadenites (1, 184 cases), urticaria (145 cases), endocarditis (34 cases) and septicemia (3 cases). A total of 1, 374 of E. rhusiopathiae isolates were serotyped and 97% of them were serotypes la (63.0%), 2 (27.3%), 1b (6.1%) and 5 (0.4%). Specific serotypes were predominant in each farm. The antibiograms of 308 isolates revealed high susceptiblity to penicillin G, ampicillin and erythromycin, while some isolates were resistant to oxytetracyclines and streptomycin.
