Effects ofBordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocidatype D vaccine on atrophic rhinitis (AR) was evaluated in the field. Thirty two pregnant sows were vaccinated twice with 2ml prior to farrowing and their 300 piglets were vaccinated with 1ml once or twice. In herd A, turbinate atrophy was seen in 16.3% and 12.1% of piglets vaccinated with one and two doses, respectively, while in 52.8% of the control group. In herd B, showing obvious clinical sings of AR and turbinate atrophy (70%) in the control group, the incidence of clinical signs and turbinate atrophy were significantly lower in the both vaccinated groups. The mean ages of slaughtering were 8.9 and 11.2 days shorter in the vaccinated groups with one and two doses, respectively.

Serum lipoproteins of 12 acute hepatitis cases were compared with those of 20 clinically healthy controls in Japanese black cattle at the final stage of fattening. VLDL and LDL fractions in sera were markedly higher in cattle with acute hepatitis than in controls. Acutehepatitis cases also showed remarkable decrease in HDL with normal particle size. These findings suggested that acute hepatitis induces an abnormal lipoprotein metabolism associated with disorders of VLDL catabolism and of HDL particle formation.

From 1990 to 1994 in Niigata Prefecture, five Japanese serows were shown to have contagious papular dermatitis, characterized by formation of papules on the lips, feet and sometimes around the nostrils, eyes and ears. Histopathology revealed vacuolar or degeneration of the prickle cells with basophilic or eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and necrotized and purulent dermatitis with marked hyperkeratosis. Orf virus antigen was demonstratedwithin inclusion bodies by immunostain, and numerous viral particles, oval to cylindricalin shape and 147 to 287nm in size, were observed in the cytoplasm of epidermal cells by electron microscopy. In the lips of a sheep intracutaneously inoculated with suspensions of the papular lesion of an affected serow, papillary lesions with cytoplasmic inclusions bodies were produced in 2 weeks since.

The mitogenic responses of peripheral blood lymphocytes were investigated in the cows after a single intramuscular injection of E-SE (selenium; 25mg and vitamin E; 680IU) at 3 weeks before parturition. In the E-SE injected cows, the serum concentration of selenium was significantly higher than those in the control cows at parturition and 1 week after parturition. The mitogenic response in injected cows was significantly higher than that in the control cows at 1 week after parturition for concanavalin A (Con A) and pokeweed mitogen (PWM), and at 2 and 4 weeks after parturition for phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). A single intramuscular injection of E-SE at 3 weeks before parturition might be related to the recovery ofimpaired lymphocyte blastogenesis in the cows at periparturient period.

Effects of diazinon 20% spot-on were examined on flea and/or tick infestation in 67 dogs and 77 cats. The numbers of infesting flea were found to be decreased in 81.0±4.9% of dogs and 69.6±5.1% of cats on day 7 of treating, while 59.7±6.2 and 65.3±5.5%, respectively, on day 28. The drug was effective in 9 of 10 dogs with tick infestation on day 7. Of a total of 67 dogs and 77 cats given drug, 1 dog and 4 cats showed salivation and/or vomiting immediately after treatment.

Ventral stabilization using Kirschner's pins and methylmethacrylate (bone cement) was conducted in six dogs with atlantoaxial subluxation. After the operation the cervical pain disappeared and the walking ability was significantly improved in all cases without recurrence. The reduction of the atlantoaxial joint was easily performed, and the respiration was stable during the operation. No distinct clinical post surgical signs appeared except for loosening of the tightened pins in one of 6 cases 45 days after operation and temporary laryngeal stridor in another case.

The effect of subcutaneous implantation of a silicon implant containing 20mg chlormadinoneacetate (CMA)(Doses implanted: 5.3-9.1mg/kg) on the prevention of estrus was investigated in 10 queens. Estrus was completely prevented during 13.4 months at a minimum dose of 5.3mg/kg. At removal of the implant, the ovaries had no functional corpus luteum and all follicles were atretic, and the uterus showed endometrial hypertrophy and proliferated uterine glands. A slight cystic hyperplasia of the endometrium was observed in 3 queens. In 3 queens implanted with CMA prior to the pregnant mere serum gonadotropin (PMSG) treatment, estrus was prevented, whereas ovulation was not prevented in 3 queens implanted with CMA wasafter estrus induction by PMSG.

A mass of fibrosarcoma (T2N0M0) on the rightside of the tongue in a 4-year-old male cat underwent surgery with intraoperative radiotherapy using a X-ray radiation unit (orthovoltage type at 10Gy). Although incomplete excision was suggested by histology, the case showed no signs of illness 8 months after operation.

Particular, gaseous and vaporus substances of cigarette side-stream smoke were investigated for mutagenicity by the Ames preincubation and gas exposure systems. Particulates were mutagenic for in theEscherichiacoli WP 2uvrA/pKM 101 andSalmonella typhimuriumTA 100 and TA 98, while gaseous and vaporus substances were not forS. typhimuriumTA 98. There was no difference in mutagenicity forS. typhimuriumTA 100 between gaseous or vaporus substances and particulates, but the mutagenicity of gaseous and vaporous substances forE. coliWP 2uvrA/pKM 101 was 5 to 10 times higher than that of particulate.

Individual milk samples from 221 cows in 12 herds and bulk milk samples from 97 herds wereexamined forStaphylococcus aureus.S.aureuswas isolated from bulk milk samples of 12 farms (12.4%) by direct culture and from additional 8 farms (8.2%) by enrichment culture, while from 20 (9.0%) individual milks from 4 of 5 herds where S.aureuswas isolated from bulk milk samples and 2 of 7 where it was not isolated. Enterotoxigenicity was detected in 8 isolates, and 3, 4 and 1 of them were of types SEA, SEB and SEA-ESEB, respectively. The results suggested that bulk milk culture might be indicative of microbial pollution of thedairy herd.
