On a farm raising about 11, 300 pheasants in Chiba Prefecture, birds of about 10 days of age began showing clinical signs of swollen eyelids and facial skin. Mortality rates among the flocks ranged from 50 to 80%. Macroscopic observation revealed gelatinous edema in the facial subcutis and slight opacity on the serosal surfaces of visceral organs. Histopathologically, suppurative changes were found in the tunica palpebral conjunctivae and in the mucous membranes of upper respiratory tracks. The birds further demonstrated fibrinopurulent peritonitis or epicarditis.
Escherichia coli was isolated in pure cultures from facial skin and parenchymatous organs. Moreover, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reactions detected the gene for the turkey rhinotracheitis virus in facial subcutaneous tissues. On the basis of these findings, the birds were diagnosed as afflicted with the swollen-head syndrome.

Three Japanese shorthorn cattle (two males and one female: 2-18 months old) born with difficulty demonstrated severe generalized cold edema. In case No.3, to clarify disturbance of peripheral lymph flow, 3ml of India ink was injected subcutaneously into the hock. At necropsy, in the subcutaneous tissue, no ink absorption was observed in peripheral lymphatics, the injected ink was retained within the injection site. Histopathological observation revealed dilation of the subcapsular sinus and edema of the medullar cords in several lymph nodes. On the basis of these findings, the three cases were diagnosed as congenital lymphedema. Hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, and decreased plasma osmotic pressure were common to all three. It seemed that these changes were secondary to severe edema. This appears to be the first case of congenital lymphedema in Japanese shorthorn cattle.

A left aortic arch with a right descending aorta was observed in a 2-day-old, female Holstein calf. The ascending aorta originated from the right ventricle and continued to the left aortic arch at the left side of the trachea. After diverging from the bicarotid trunk and the left subclavian artery, it turned medially, passed to the right over the trachea and the esophagus, diverged from the aberrant right subclavian artery, and joined the right descending aorta. The trachea and esophagus were compressed by an incomplete vascular ring formed by the ascending aorta, left aortic arch, right descending aorta, and right subclavian artery. The calf also demonstrated other cardiovascular malformations such as
situs inmrsus of the atria, straddling of the mitral valve, right-ventricular double outlet, ventricular septal defect, tubular hypoplasia of the aortic isthmus, congenital fistula between the left coronary artery and the left ventricle, and right costocervical venous connection to the left atrium.

Effects of 0.2% cyclosporine (CsA) on lacrimation in dogs suffering from kerato-conjunctivitis sicca (KCS) were evaluated. Four healthy dogs and 16 adult dogs suffering from KCS were used. On the basis of the Schirmer tear test (STT), the dogs with KCS were divided into 4 groups: the healthy group (8 normal eyes with STT values of 15 mm/min or more), Group I (12 eyes with STT values of 0 mm/min), Group II (7 eyes with STT values of from 1 to 5 mm/min), and Group III (5 eyes with STT values of from 6 to 10 mm/min). The CsA ointment was administered twice a day for 6 weeks. Local administration of CsA had no effect on lacrimation in the healthy dogs. On the other hand, CsA treatment significantly increased lacrimation during the experiment in Groups I and II. In all groups, CsA improved such clinical signs as corneal lusterlessness, conjunctival hypertrophy, blepharo-edema, and ocular discomfort. CsA induced no adverse side effects in any of the dogs tested.

Co-cultivation with Vero or B95a cell lines was used to study the biological and serological properties of 15 strains of canine distemper virus (CDV) isolated from dogs in Japan from 1982 to 1998. Those properties were then compared with those of the CDV vaccine strain used in Japan. The vaccine strain and some of the fieldisolates cultured in Vero cells demonstrated proliferation potency in chicken embryonic fibroblast cell culture and pock-forming capacity and neurovirulence in suckling mice. Cross-neutralization tests using 9 fieldisolates, and the vaccine strain revealed no significant antigenic difference among the field-isolates. The fieldisolates were, however, somewhat different strain from the vaccine strain in antigenicity. Since the antiserum to the vaccine dramatically neutralizes all the field-isolates, the vaccine used currently in Japan can be considered effective against recently isolated CDV strains.

Arthrodesis was performed on the left elbow of a 4-year-old Pomeranian in which surgical reduction of elbow luxation had failed. Absence of the anconeal processes and hypoplasia of the coronoid processes as revealed by radiography of the right elbow led to strong suspicion of congenital elbow anomaly as an etiologic factor in left-elbow luxation.

Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO), which is known to decrease intracranial pressure and to inhibit secondary damage to nervous tissue effectively, was administered intravenously to a dog for the purpose of medically improving central nervous system (CNS) symptoms. The patient, a male 140-day-old Shih Tzu dog was attacked by sudden, severe seizures caused by hydrocephalus. Primarily medical treatment with intermittent DMSO administration (1 g/kg BW, i. v. drip) almost entirely inhibited the seizures till the patient died 50 days after the onset. Though it gradually weakened, the patient remained well conscious and continued living with its family till its last morning. By retarding strength decline caused by the seizures, the therapy contributed to preserving the quality of life while prolonging it. We recognize that DMSO is useful in supportive therapy during the period when the causes of CNS symptoms are being determined and against the cases where the possibility of intracranial hemorrhage cannot be ruled out.

A 10-year-old, mixed-breed male dog was referred to us because of a sudden onset of bilateral hind-limb paralysis occurring 3 weeks before the visit. We diagnosed the disease as abdominal aortic thromboembolism secondary to endocarditis on the basis of clinical symptoms and findings of the mitral valve vegetation and contrast-medium filling defect by echocardiography and abdominal aortic angiography, respectively. After a week, during which blood transfusion had improved the anemia and the physical condition had stabilized, thrombectomy and medical and physical therapy were performed. Antibiotics and anticoagulants were administered for one month after the surgery. By that time, the dog could walk, though knuckling persisted. After 3 months, echocardiography detected no vegetation of the mitral valve. After 6 months, bilateral posterior-limb function was almost completely restored.

The livers and spleens of 45 broiler chickens (33 to 79 days old) suspected of Marek's disease (MD) at meat inspection were collected and examined histopathologically. In most cases, the organs were enlarged from two to three times in size, and multiple, small, white areas of plaque or infrequent, large, white nodules were observed. Although histopathologically only 9 birds (20%) were diagnosed as MD, 35 birds (78%) demonstrated tumor-like spindle-cell proliferative lesions in the Glisson's sheath of the liver and in the white pulp and around the sheathed arteries of the spleen. The proliferating cells were mainly spindle-shaped or pleomorphic, and variable in size with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) based on primer H5 and H7 of the avian leukosis virus strain J (ALV-J) produced specific amplifications of ALV-J in 4 of 5 cases.
