Authors have studied the position of the vocal cords in cadavers.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the position of the vocal cords in complete paralytic state of the recurrent nerve, because the vocal cords in recurrent palaysis does not reveal a fixed position and show the following position such as median, paramedian or intermedian position.
The intermedian position of the vocal cords, forming a slight excavation, was called clinically as the cadaveric position of the vocal cords.
But this definition of the cadaveric position has been for a long time opposed by many authors.
By the authors observation on the 30 cadavers, the vocal cords revealed many types, which were classified into the following 4 types.
I type……median position (1 case)
II type……paramedian (17 cases)
with excavation (4 cases)
without excavation (13 cases)
III type……intermedian position (9 cases)
with excavation (6 cases)
without excavation (3 cases)
IV type……inspiratoric position (3 cases)
Furthermore, in this observation the masurements of the vocal cords were carried out in length, proportion of the ligament part to the cartilage part, angle forming in its anterior commissur etc.
From this observations the author hold the opinion that the various positions of the vocal cords in recurrent paralysis might be due to the individual variation of the larynx muscles.
