    The stapes is considered as the most important one among the auditory ossicles, which transmits air borne sound into the inner ear fluid. The vibratory mode of the stapes footplate was analysed by means of holographic interferometry. The technique used was time-averaged holography with the light source of helium-neon laser, the wave length of which was 6328A. As the material for this study, ten temporal bone specimens taken from the human cadaver were used, and each specimen was treated as to be observed at the footplate from the inner ear side. From the external ear canal side, the tympanic membrane of each specimen was vibrated with test sound generated from a speaker. Test tones ranged from 250Hz to 8, 000Hz in frequency, from 80dB to 110dB in intensity, and holograms were recorded and reconstructed.
    Conclusion is that, as the intensity of the test sound increased, the way of vibration of the stapes footplate turned from piston-like movement to the hinged motion around a virtual axis behind the oval window crossing to long axis of the footplate at from 35 to 55 degrees.

    To determine the muscles responsible for the pumping function of the Eustachian tube and to examine the detailed processes of this function, we conducted 1) a measurement of tympanal pressure during swallowing and during selective stimulation of the tensor and the levator muscles, and 2) visual and radiographic observations of fluid in the tube; in cats, dogs and a monkey. The results were; 1) occurrence of negative pressure in the tube by ontraction of the tensor muscle, and 2) displacement of the fluid from the tympanum to the pharynx through the tube by repeated contractions of the tensor. It was concluded that contractions and relaxations of the tensor muscle cause the pumping function of the Eustachian tube, which expells any fluid from the tube into the pharynx.

    Six patients with nasal allergy due to Japanese Apricot pollen which are called "Ume" pollen were clinically examined. All cases had hyperrhinorrhea and nasal obstruction with ocular symptoms, and one of them also had itching in the pharynx. They have lived for 8 to 47 years near by a large grove of Japanese apricot and 4 of them were fruit-growers. Among these four cases, three have suffured from nasal and ocular symtoms while they were working in the grove. These cases had positive skin reaction to clude "Ume" pollen extract, and five patients also reacted to nasal and ocular provocative tests.
    Serum IgE value by RIST was distributed from 98 to 2300IU/ml (mean value 887IU/ml). Specific anti-"Ume" pollen IgE in the serum was measured by BrCN activated RAST method, and serum value of five patients was 1.6 timed to 3.5 times higher than that of non-allergic subjects.
    Air-borne "Ume" pollen collected in a grove were observed from the beginning of February to the middle of March, and maximum grain count was 43 per cm2 in 24 hours.

    Hearing and vestibular fundtion tests were performed in 229 patients treated with hemodialysis and following results were obtained.
    1. Bilateral hearing loss was found in 106 patients and unilateral loss was in 31.
    2. Eighty three patients had the dysfunction of the vestibular system.
    3. Those who impaired both in the hearing and vestibular function were 60.
    4. In the patients whose hearing tests were performed every two month for one and half years, neither any increase nor decrease in hearing threshold were shown.
    These results were discussed in the light of the available literature.

    The establishment of simpler and more reliable methods for objective olfactory acuity evaluation is desired for diagnosis of the degree of olfactory disturbance after traffic accidents and labor accidents. In this paper, the possibility of the objective olfactory acuity evaluation by applying the respiratory function test was examined. As the test indices, the temperature change at the anterior nostril (the nose method) and the motion of the chest girth in breathing (the chest method) were used to monitor the respiratory curves continuously when the odours of T & T olfactometer are presented.
    The following results are obtained in subjects with normal olfaction:
    1) In 92% of the cases, the reaction was found on the respiratory curves at the presentation of the odours.
    2) However, in 6.4% the false positive reaction was obtained when the non-smell Nujol liquid was presented.
    3) As for the type of reactions, the momentary amplitude decrease was most frequently obtained (39-43%), followed by the bated breath or notch type, the momentary amplification type, and the frequent respiration type.
    4) The threshold of the olfactory acuity based on the respiratory reaction was slightly higher than the value obtained by the standard olfactory test. The difference between the two values was 0 in 24%, 1 in 44% and 2 or more in 32%.
    5) The reaction appeared to be more sensitive in the nose method than in the chest method.
    6) By adding the mental arithmetic task, the reaction ecame clearer.
    7) In those cases with a high anxiety level in the Taylor's anxiety test, the judgement of the reaction was relatively difficult.
    It was concluded that the present method of the respiratory reaction test was applicable for evaluating the olfactory acuity. However, meticurous cares must be taken for definite diagnosis, since psychological factors have to be always taken into consideration in this type of test.

    The intravenous olfaction test with Alinamin is a simple procedure and widely used. However, fundamentals on the test are still obscure in many respects.
    In the present study we measured changes with time in concentrations of an odorous substance in the expired air during the test.
    Measurement was made of concentrations of the odorous substance in the expired air after intravenous injection of Alinamin by subjecting a sulfur compound contained in Alinamin or its detritus to the gas chromatograph (Shimazu GC-6A). The results obtained were as follows.
    1) Alinamin was not detected in the expired air after intravenous injection of Alinamin. However, a product of decomposition of Alinamin was observed.
    2) Measurement was made of concentrations of this product with time. As a result, it was observed 20 seconds after initiation of the intravenous injection, reached its peak 40-60 seconds later and then decreased gradually.
    3) This product was identified as N-propyl mercaptan.
    4) We were able to learn changes with time in concentration of N-propyl mercaptan in the expired air after intravenous injection of Alinamin.

    Recently CT-scan has been widely used for the observation and diagnosis of various diseases in the otorhinolaryngological field. Findings of CT-scan might be available for the dicision of the staging of maxillary cancer. Meanwhile, there are some artifacts on the image of CT-scan, especially of the nasal and paranasal sinuses, which are consisted with complicated thin bony walls. We sometimes observed apparent thickening of the posterior bone wall of the maxillary sinus in the cases of unilateral sinusitis, but it was not observed during the operation. To be proved any artifact of CT-scan, phantom studies using with hen's egg in various condition were done. It suggests that the image of the posterior bone wall was sometimes affected and was made as "thickened" by the overlapping of the high density object, i. e., mucopurulent discharge or really thickened maxillary membrane. If there is early stage of maxillary cancer, the small bone destruction might be cancelled with this artifact and misdiagnosis will be made. We should pay special attention to define the false shadow on the CT-scan in the case of unilateral sinusitis or of the maxillary cancer.
