The respiratory function of 17 laryngectomees was evaluated before and after laryngectomy and that of 15 normal subjects in the same generation was also evaluated. On the functional test after laryngectomy, a mouth piece was attached around the permanent tracheostoma of the patients with Visco-Gel, which gave a larger cross-section area to the connection between the patient and a spirometer. A statistical analysis of data was performed with the Student's t-test. The results were as follows:
1) No significant change in TV, RV and CV/VC was found after laryngectomy and also between laryngectomees and normal subjects.
2) No significant change in %VC, FEV1.0%, MMF and V25 was found after laryngectomy, but significant change was found between laryngectomees and normal subjects.
3) Significant change in PEFR and ATI was found after laryngectomy, and also between laryngectomees and normal subjects.
These results indicate that the parameter of the upper respiratory tract function e. g. PEFR increased after laryngectomy, but the parameters of the lower respiratory tract function were unchanged after laryngectomy.
