Four cows were affected with mastitis due to
Nocardia asteroides in the same barn over a period from September, 1976, to March, 1977. The mastitis was acute in 2 cows and chronic in the others. The acute cases exhibited swelling and induration of the udders after parturition and discharge of
N. asteroides organisms. Intramammary injection with sulfa drugs brought about improvement to one of these cases. One of the chronic cases- turned to be acute necrotic mastitis accompanied with pyocyaneus infection immediately after parturition.
Histologically, lesions of proliferative fibrosis containing clumps of Nocardia organisms were seen in one of the acute cases.
